It is one of the most common questions when shopping for brakes: if I buy new rotors, do the pads come with them? The short answer is usually no - but there is an easy way to get both together.
Rotors and pads are normally sold separately
A rotor listing typically includes just the rotors, most often sold as a pair for one axle. A pad listing includes just the pad set. They are separate wear items with separate part numbers, so buying one does not include the other. Always read what the listing says is in the box.
Brake kits bundle everything
If you want rotors and pads in one purchase, look for a brake kit. A front-and-rear kit typically includes the rotors for both axles, the matching ceramic pad sets, and often the hardware - everything for a complete brake job in one box, usually cheaper than buying each piece on its own. Kits are the simplest way to do a full brake refresh at once.
Should you replace pads and rotors together?
Often, yes. Worn pads and worn rotors tend to reach the end at similar times, and new pads bed in best against a fresh rotor surface. If your rotors are scored, below minimum thickness, or causing a pulsing pedal, replace them with the pads - see our guide on when to replace rotors. If the rotors are still smooth and within spec, you can do pads alone.
What to buy
- Pads only: if rotors are healthy - shop brake pads by vehicle.
- Everything at once: choose a front-and-rear kit for the complete job.
- Always add hardware: fresh clips and shims keep new pads quiet - see brake hardware kits.
