Are Brake Fluid Types Compatible? DOT Mixing Explained

Standing in the parts aisle looking at DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5, and DOT 5.1 brake fluid, it is fair to ask: are these compatible? Can you top one up with another? The answer is mostly yes - with one critical exception. Here is the rule.

The glycol family: DOT 3, 4, and 5.1

DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1 are all glycol-based fluids, and they are chemically compatible - they can be mixed in a pinch. They differ mainly in boiling point (5.1 highest, 3 lowest) - see our DOT 3 vs 4 vs 5.1 guide. Best practice is to use the rating your vehicle specifies, or a higher one if the maker allows, but topping up a DOT 3 system with DOT 4 in an emergency will not harm anything.

The exception: DOT 5 is different

DOT 5 (no point-one) is SILICONE-based, not glycol - and it is NOT compatible with DOT 3, 4, or 5.1. Never mix silicone DOT 5 into a glycol system or vice versa. Doing so can cause the fluids to separate, gel, or fail to protect the system, and it can wreck seals and braking performance. DOT 5 is used in specific applications and should be kept entirely separate.

A quick reference

  • DOT 3 + DOT 4 + DOT 5.1 - all glycol, all compatible with each other.
  • DOT 5 - silicone, compatible with NONE of the above. Keep separate.
  • Always use the vehicle's specified rating (or higher glycol rating if allowed).

Best practice

Rather than mixing, do a full brake fluid flush with the correct fluid on schedule - fluid absorbs moisture over time regardless of type. Keep the fluid fresh and the rest of the system healthy with good pads and hardware. When in doubt about which fluid your vehicle needs, check the reservoir cap or owner's manual - and never guess with DOT 5.
