Brake fluid is the hydraulic link between your foot and the pads. Press the pedal and the fluid transfers that force to the calipers. The DOT rating on the bottle tells you how the fluid handles heat - and heat is what makes or breaks a brake system under hard use.
What the DOT numbers mean
- DOT 3: a glycol-based fluid with the lowest boiling point of the common three. Fine for everyday driving and used in many older and economy vehicles.
- DOT 4: also glycol-based but with a higher boiling point, so it resists fade better under heat. It is the most common factory fill on modern vehicles, especially those with ABS and stability control.
- DOT 5.1: glycol-based like 3 and 4 (do not confuse it with DOT 5), with an even higher boiling point for demanding use.
Note that DOT 5 (no point-one) is silicone-based and is NOT compatible with DOT 3, 4, or 5.1 systems. Never mix silicone DOT 5 into a glycol system.
Why boiling point matters
Hard braking heats the fluid. If it boils, it forms gas bubbles, and gas compresses where liquid does not - the result is a soft or sinking pedal right when you need the brakes most. Higher DOT ratings resist this. That is why heavier vehicles, towing, and spirited driving call for DOT 4 or 5.1.
Can you mix them?
The glycol fluids - DOT 3, 4, and 5.1 - are chemically compatible and can be mixed in a pinch, but always use the rating your vehicle specifies (or higher, if the maker allows it). Never top a system up with silicone DOT 5.
How often to flush
Glycol brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and can corrode parts from the inside. Most makers recommend a brake fluid flush every 2 to 3 years. If your pedal feels soft or the fluid looks dark, have it checked. A healthy hydraulic system lets your pads and rotors do their job.
