Brake calipers are built to last, but they are not immortal - and as a car piles on miles, the odds of a caliper problem climb. Whether yours last 200,000 miles or fail at 90,000 depends heavily on climate and maintenance. Here is what to expect at high mileage.
What wears out on a caliper
The caliper body lasts, but its seals, piston, dust boots, and slide pins age. Over many years the rubber piston boot can crack and let moisture in, rusting the piston so it sticks; the slide pins can corrode and seize. Climate is the big factor
Calipers in the salt-belt rust far faster than those in dry climates. Road salt attacks slide pins, bleeder screws, and boots, so a northern car may need caliper work by 100k while a desert car's calipers last the vehicle's life. High humidity and lots of short trips (which never fully dry the brakes) accelerate corrosion too.
Signs a high-mileage caliper is done

Preventive care
You extend caliper life by servicing the slide pins and greasing them at every brake job, keeping fluid fresh so internal corrosion stays down, and replacing torn boots early. When a high-mileage caliper does need work, do it before fitting new pads and hardware.
