Rebuild or Replace a Brake Caliper?

When a brake caliper sticks, leaks, or seizes, you have two paths: rebuild the existing caliper with a repair kit, or replace it with a new or remanufactured unit. Both can fix the problem - here is how to decide.

What rebuilding involves

Rebuilding uses a caliper repair kit to replace the internal seals, the piston dust boot, and sometimes the piston itself. You disassemble the caliper, clean the bore, and reassemble with fresh seals. It is economical and keeps your original caliper, but it only makes sense if the bore is clean and not pitted - corrosion in the bore will chew up new seals.

What replacing involves

Replacing swaps in a new or remanufactured caliper. A reman unit has already been rebuilt and tested with a fresh bore finish, so it sidesteps the risk of a pitted bore. It costs more than a seal kit but less than the labor headache of rebuilding a marginal caliper. Replacement is the safer bet when the piston or bore is corroded.

When to rebuild

  • The bore is smooth and clean, just the seals/boot are worn or torn.
  • You want to save money and the caliper is otherwise sound.

When to replace

  • The piston or bore is pitted, corroded, or scored.
  • The caliper body is cracked or damaged.
  • You want the reliability of a fresh, tested unit.

Whichever you choose

Replace calipers in axle pairs if both are aged, bleed the brakes afterward (see brake bleeding basics), and fit fresh pads and hardware. Brakes are safety-critical - if you are not comfortable with hydraulic work, have a professional do it.
