Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack Brakes Explained

Six-piston fixed brake caliper over a large vented rotor, Mustang GT Performance Pack brakes

By Core Brake Parts Tech Team — Circleville, OH warehouse

The Mustang GT Performance Package swaps the standard front brakes for Brembo six-piston fixed aluminum calipers clamping much larger vented rotors, and on the current 2024-and-later car it also upgrades the rear to four-piston fixed calipers. On the 2015-2023 (S550) car the package front rotor is 380 mm by 34 mm; on the 2024-and-later (S650) car it grows to 390 mm by 36 mm. Knowing which generation and which package you have is the most important step before you buy pads or rotors, because these parts do not interchange with the standard GT brakes.

What the Performance Package Actually Changes on the Brakes

A standard Mustang GT already has capable brakes, so the package is about heat capacity and pedal consistency under repeated hard stops, not just a shorter single stop. Ford's published technical specifications for the current car spell out the difference plainly. Every S650 Mustang uses four-wheel power disc brakes with an electronic parking brake (EPB), an Electronic Brake Booster, a four-sensor four-channel ABS and AdvanceTrac stability control. The Performance Package adds the bigger hardware below, plus the electronic drift brake feature.

2024+ Mustang GT Standard GT GT Performance Package
Front rotor 352 x 32 mm vented 390 x 36 mm vented
Front caliper Four-piston 46 mm fixed aluminum Brembo six-piston 36 mm fixed aluminum
Rear rotor 350 x 26 mm vented 355 x 28 mm vented
Rear caliper Single-piston 45 mm floating aluminum Four-piston 30 mm fixed aluminum
Front swept area 576 sq. cm per plate 768 sq. cm per plate
Rear swept area 509 sq. cm per plate 523 sq. cm per plate
Pad material NAO (standard) Low-metallic (optional)

That front swept-area jump, from 576 to 768 square centimeters per rotor face, is where most of the extra fade resistance comes from. More iron and more pad contact area means the brakes absorb and shed more heat before the pads leave their working temperature. The Dark Horse uses the same 390 x 36 mm front size and six-piston Brembo, but Ford lists its front discs as two-piece, so do not assume Dark Horse rotors and GT Performance Package rotors are the same part.

The package also brings wider summer tires on the GT: 255/40R19 on a 19 x 9 inch wheel in front and 275/40R19 on a 19 x 9.5 inch wheel in the rear. Tire grip sets the ceiling on how hard any brake can stop the car, so worn tires or all-season replacements will undercut what the hardware can do.

The 2015-2023 (S550) Performance Pack Brakes

On the previous generation, the package brake was a Brembo six-piston front caliper on a roughly 15-inch vented rotor. Ford Performance sells that setup as a bolt-on kit and states it is original equipment on the 2015-2019 Mustang GT Performance Package. Its listed service parts are Ford pad GR3Z-2001-C (Motorcraft BRF1462) and Ford rotor GR3Z-1125-L (Motorcraft BRRF246), a useful cross-check when you match replacement parts to your car.

Rotor makers list the S550 Brembo front rotor as 380 mm x 34 mm and note that the same six-piston Brembo setup appears on the Bullitt and Mach 1. That 380 mm figure is the fastest way to confirm fitment: if a part listing says "380mm front rotor" or "with Performance Package," it is meant for the Brembo car. If it lists a smaller front rotor, it is for the standard brake.

Two practical notes come from Ford Performance's listing for that kit. First, the six-piston caliper needs wheel clearance, and Ford requires a specific wheel or an equivalent with the kit, so a smaller or differently shaped aftermarket wheel may not clear it. Second, the kit includes brake hoses only for EcoBoost conversions and says they are not needed on the 5.0L GT, which tells you the GT's front hoses already suit the Brembo caliper.

Symptoms and How to Diagnose Them

Performance Package brakes wear the same way any disc brake does, but the larger, harder-working parts make a few symptoms more common, especially on cars that see autocross or track days.

  • Vibration or steering-wheel shimmy under braking. Usually uneven pad material deposited on the rotor after hard stops followed by holding the pedal at a standstill. Measure rotor runout and thickness variation before assuming the rotor is warped.
  • Squeal or grinding. Light squeal can come with performance pad compounds. Grinding means metal-to-metal or wear indicator contact; stop driving and inspect.
  • Long or soft pedal after a hard session. Overheated fluid is the usual cause. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and its boiling point drops, so old fluid fades first.
  • Uneven pad wear across one caliper. On a six-piston fixed caliper, a sticking piston shows up as a tapered or unevenly worn pad. Clean the pad contact points and inspect the piston seals and dust boots.
  • Fluid near the firewall on a manual car, or trouble shifting. Manual Mustangs share brake fluid with the clutch hydraulics, so a clutch line leak can look like a brake problem. See the recall note below.

Replacing Pads and Rotors: Which Parts Fit

Because the Brembo front brake is a completely different size from the standard GT brake, always shop by package, not just year and model.

Street driving

A quality street pad paired with a new rotor is the right call for most owners. For the 2015-2022 Brembo car, the DBA RP Performance front pad set for the 380mm Performance Package brakes is made for this caliper. On 2015-2017 cars, the Hawk Performance Ceramic front pads for the Brembo brake package are a low-dust street choice.

Spirited driving and track days

If your brakes see repeated high temperatures, a two-piece rotor with an aluminum hat reduces unsprung weight and lets the braking ring expand as it heats. GiroDisc, for example, lists its S550 Brembo front rotor at about 24.1 lbs against 33.4 lbs for the stock part. Options for the S550 Brembo car include the DBA 5000 Series XD two-piece front rotor for the 380mm Performance Package and the Baer EradiSpeed+ two-piece front rotors for the OE Performance Package. 2024-and-later cars

The S650 package uses 390 mm front rotors and a four-piston rear caliper, so S550 Performance Pack parts will not fit. Confirm the listing names the 2024-and-later GT with Performance Package, and remember that the Dark Horse lists its own two-piece front disc.

What to Replace at the Same Time, and How Hard the Job Is

  • Brake fluid. Flush it whenever you do a track-focused pad and rotor job. Ford's Motorcraft DOT 4 LV fluid (specification WSS-M6C65-A2) is listed with a 260 C (500 F) dry and 170 C (338 F) wet boiling point, is recommended for ABS systems with stability control, and carries a recommended change interval of every three years. Always use the specification printed on your reservoir cap or in your owner's manual.
  • Brake lines. Braided stainless brake lines firm up pedal feel on track cars that already have fresh fluid.
  • Pad hardware. Replace worn anti-rattle clips and pad pins so the new pads move and seat cleanly.
  • Clutch hydraulics on 2024 manual cars. Ford recalled certain 2024 Mustangs with manual transmissions (NHTSA recall 24V-394) because the clutch pressure line could be improperly retained to the firewall, contact hot exhaust and leak brake fluid. Ford notes brake function is not affected, but shifting can be, so make sure that recall has been completed.

Pads alone on a fixed six-piston caliper are one of the easier brake jobs: the caliper stays mounted, you push the pistons back evenly, and the pads drop in. Rotors mean removing the caliper and its mounting bolts; torque them to the value in the factory service manual and never let the caliper hang by its hose. On 2024-and-later cars with the electronic parking brake, follow the service manual procedure to put the rear brakes in service mode before touching the rear calipers. Finish every job by bedding in the pads with a series of moderate-to-firm stops, and avoid holding the pedal at a standstill on hot rotors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my Mustang GT has the Performance Package brakes?

Look through the front wheel. Package cars have a large six-piston fixed Brembo caliper and a noticeably bigger rotor than a standard GT. The window sticker or a build-sheet lookup through a Ford dealer confirms it. Do not rely on appearance alone when ordering parts.

Are 2015-2023 Performance Pack rotors the same as 2024 Performance Package rotors?

No. The S550 package uses a 380 x 34 mm front rotor, while Ford lists the 2024-and-later package front rotor at 390 x 36 mm. They are different parts.

Can I put Performance Pack brakes on a standard 2015-2023 Mustang GT?

Yes. Ford Performance sells the six-piston front kit for the 2015-2023 GT and EcoBoost. Plan for wheels that clear the caliper, since Ford requires a specific wheel or equivalent with that kit.

Do the Brembo brakes need special pads?

They need pads shaped for the six-piston Brembo caliper. Standard GT pads will not fit. Choose a street compound for daily use or a performance compound for track days.

How often should I change brake fluid on a Performance Package Mustang?

Ford's Motorcraft DOT 4 LV fluid carries a recommended change interval of every three years. Cars that see track days benefit from a flush before each season because hard use heats the fluid.
