The DBA brake pads we carry cover Toyota Land Cruisers from 1983 to 2007, and the right part number depends entirely on your model years: the pad shape changed with each generation, and the 2000-2007 trucks use different pads front and rear. For 2008-2021 trucks, the matching performance pads we carry come from Hawk and EBC rather than DBA. Below is how to match the part to your truck, which compound suits how you drive, and what to replace at the same time.
Why the Land Cruiser Is Hard on Brakes
A Land Cruiser is a heavy body-on-frame four-wheel drive, and owners tend to make it heavier: steel bumpers, winches, roof racks, drawers, bigger tires and a trailer behind it. Every one of those adds energy the brakes must turn into heat on each stop. Brakes that were fine on a stock truck start to fade, glaze or wear quickly once the truck is built out.
That is the use case DBA designs its Xtreme Performance pads around. DBA recommends its XP pads for street performance and police pursuit vehicles, as well as club track days, heavy towing and upgraded 4WDs. In other words, the loaded-up Land Cruiser is one of the vehicles the compound was built for, not an afterthought.
DBA Brake Pads by Land Cruiser Model Year
Pad shapes are not shared across generations, so start with your year. These are the DBA pad sets we carry that are listed for the Land Cruiser:
| Model years | Axle | DBA part |
|---|---|---|
| 1983-1990 | Front | DBA XP front brake pads DB288XP for 1983-1990 Land Cruiser |
| 1991-1996 | Front | DBA XP650 front pad set DB1199XP for 1991-1996 Land Cruiser |
| 2000-2007 | Front | DBA XP650 front pads DB1365XP for 2000-2007 Land Cruiser |
| 2000-2007 | Rear | DBA XP650 rear pads DB1383XP for 2000-2007 Land Cruiser |
If your truck falls on a year boundary, or it has been converted with brakes from another model, pull a pad and compare the backing-plate shape before ordering. A pad that is almost the right shape is the wrong pad.
What the XP Compound Does Differently
DBA describes its Xtreme Performance pads as a carbon-fibre, low copper formulation with high friction levels and consistent performance across the full temperature range, from cold to very hot. That matters on a Land Cruiser because a daily-driven truck spends most of its life with cool brakes, then suddenly needs everything they have on a long downhill grade with a trailer.
DBA also states the pads are scorched at the factory for optimal braking performance. Scorching burns off the resins near the surface so the first few stops do not produce the smell and fade that a raw pad can. You should still bed them in properly against the rotor so an even transfer layer forms.
- Good fit: trucks that tow, carry a heavy build, or drive long mountain descents.
- Trade-off: a high-friction performance pad generally makes more dust than a mild OE-style ceramic, and you should expect more rotor wear than with a soft street pad.
- Not needed: a stock, lightly loaded commuter truck will be well served by a quality OE-style pad.
2008-2021 Land Cruiser: Hawk and EBC Pad Options
For the later trucks, the pads we carry come from two other performance brands, and they suit different drivers.
- Hawk Ceramic street front pads HB589Z.704 for 2008-2014 Land Cruiser: the choice for a daily driver that wants a clean, quiet street pad.
- EBC Bluestuff NDX pads DP51816NDX for 2008-2021 Land Cruiser 5.7L: a high-friction pad positioned between street and track use, a fit for the truck that is driven hard or heavily loaded. Follow the bedding procedure in the box before you tow.
- Hawk HP+ pad set HB589N.704 for 2008-2021 Land Cruiser: Hawk lists HP+ with a 100-800 F operating range and 300-600 F optimal range and calls it ideal for autocross. On a heavy truck that means it works best when the brakes are worked hard, such as heavy towing or steep descents. It is not the pad to pick for quiet commuting.
Note the EBC listing specifies the 5.7L and a 150 mm wheel-bolt pattern. Confirm both on your truck before ordering.
Rotors and Calipers: What to Replace With the Pads
New pads on worn or grooved rotors will not bed in evenly and often shudder. Measure your rotors against the minimum thickness cast or stamped on the rotor, and replace them if they are under spec, heat-cracked or deeply scored. For the 2016 truck we carry the Hawk Talon cross-drilled and slotted front rotor set HTC4977. For other years, see our brake rotor collection.
DBA's own rotors for the Land Cruiser are its 4000 Series T3 line, which DBA recommends for high-performance and heavy off-road use. It uses Kangaroo Paw vane ventilation and tri-symmetrical CNC slots that DBA says give a quieter, smoother pedal feel and give brake dust and gases more exit points.
Calipers are the other common Land Cruiser brake problem: sticking pistons and torn boots show up as a pull to one side, one pad worn far more than the other, or a hot, smelly wheel after a drive. DBA Street Series calipers are new units, not rebuilt cores, and come with piston, housing and brackets, but without pads. DBA caliper numbers are split by Land Cruiser series, and some cover models not sold in the US, such as the 70 Series. Confirm the caliper number against DBA's catalog for your exact truck, and replace calipers in axle pairs. Browse options in our brake caliper collection.
Also plan on:
- Fresh brake fluid of the type printed on your master cylinder cap, since old fluid absorbs moisture and boils sooner under heavy use.
- New pad hardware and clips from our brake hardware kits, so the new pads slide freely.
- Inspecting the flexible hoses for cracks or bulging, especially on lifted trucks where hoses can be stretched at full droop.
Parking Brake Wear on Loaded Trucks
DBA points out that aging Land Cruisers can suffer handbrake cable wear, particularly when heavily loaded or parked on slopes, and it now sells an electric secondary park brake for the 70 and 200 Series as a supplement to the factory handbrake. Whether or not you go that route, check parking-brake adjustment and cable condition any time you do a rear brake job on a heavy truck.
How Hard Is the Job?
Swapping pads on a Land Cruiser is a straightforward job for a home mechanic with a floor jack, rated jack stands, a torque wrench and a caliper piston tool. The wheels and brake parts are heavy, so plan on more time than a car. Torque the caliper and wheel fasteners to the values in the factory service manual, pump the pedal before moving the truck, and bed the new pads in before you tow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do DBA brake pads fit my 2015 Land Cruiser?
The DBA pads we carry are listed for 1983-2007 trucks. For 2008-2021 trucks, choose the Hawk or EBC pads listed above that match your years and engine.
Are DBA XP650 pads too aggressive for daily driving?
DBA designs XP pads to work across the full temperature range, so they work cold. Expect more dust than a mild OE-style pad. If you never tow or carry a heavy build, an OE-style pad is usually the more sensible choice.
Do I need new rotors with new pads?
Only if the rotors are below minimum thickness, cracked, warped or deeply grooved. Otherwise, clean them well and bed the new pads in properly.
Should I replace both front calipers at once?
Yes. Replace calipers in axle pairs so both sides clamp evenly and the truck does not pull.
Do performance pads help when towing?
A heat-tolerant pad resists fade on long descents, which is where towing loads cause trouble. DBA specifically recommends its XP pads for heavy towing and upgraded 4WDs.
