Most 2008-2016 Cadillac CTS caliper problems are not defects in the caliper casting itself. They come from seized slide pins, a torn piston dust boot that lets moisture corrode the piston, or a flexible brake hose that collapses internally and holds pressure on one wheel. NHTSA's recall records for the 2008-2016 CTS list no caliper recall, so a dragging or pulling brake on these cars is a wear-and-maintenance repair, and in most cases it is a job a careful owner can do in an afternoon.
Which Calipers Your CTS Has
The 2008-2016 range covers two generations of the car, and the brake hardware is not the same across all of them. Before you order anything, pin down which version you have.
| Model | Front caliper | Parking brake | Service notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2008-2013 CTS (second generation) | Sliding (floating) caliper on guide pins | Manual or electric, depending on the car, per the 2010 owner manual | Slide pins and boots are the main wear items |
| Second-generation CTS-V | Fixed Brembo, six-piston front | Check your car | No slide pins; piston seals and dust boots matter more |
| 2014-2016 CTS (third generation) | Varies by trim and brake package | Electric Parking Brake (EPB), switch on the instrument panel | Rear piston must be retracted the correct way on EPB cars |
The owner manuals for both generations specify DOT 3 brake fluid, used new from a sealed container. That matters for caliper work, because any time you open the hydraulic system you will be topping off and bleeding with fluid.
Symptoms of a Failing Caliper
A caliper that is sticking, leaking or not releasing usually tells you in one of these ways:
- Pull to one side under braking or while cruising. A caliper that does not release keeps light pressure on one rotor, so the car drifts toward that wheel.
- One wheel much hotter than the others after a drive. Compare wheel temperature carefully near the hub, or use an infrared thermometer. A dragging corner stands out clearly.
- Burning smell and brake dust concentrated on one wheel. Overheated pad material has a sharp, acrid smell.
- Uneven pad wear. On a sliding caliper, an inner pad worn far thinner than the outer pad, or a pad worn at a taper, points to seized slide pins.
- Wet caliper, wet inner wheel, or a dropping fluid level. GM's owner manual gives only two reasons for a low reservoir: normal lining wear, or a leak in the hydraulic system. If the pads are not worn and the level is dropping, look for a weeping piston seal, bleeder or hose.
- Soft pedal or a pedal that does not return to normal height. GM tells owners to see a dealer if pedal travel increases rapidly or the pedal does not return, because it can be a sign that brake service is needed.
- Warning lights. A low fluid level turns on the brake system warning light. On 2014-2016 cars, a Service Electric Parking Brake light points at the EPB system, which works through the rear calipers.
What Actually Causes CTS Caliper Trouble
Seized slide pins
On the sliding calipers used on standard CTS models, the caliper body has to float freely on two guide pins. Brembo's technical guidance lists what happens when guide pins deteriorate: the caliper stops sliding, it can be damaged, it leaves residual drag, the disc overheats, and pads and discs wear out early. This is the most common cause of a CTS brake that drags, and often the caliper itself is fine once the pins are cleaned, lubricated with a brake-specific lubricant and fitted with new boots.
Torn dust boots and corroded pistons
The rubber dust cover around each piston keeps water and dirt out of the piston seat. Once that boot splits, road spray gets in, corrosion builds on the piston, and the piston starts to bind. Brembo notes that the sealing ring behind the boot does two jobs: it keeps fluid in, and it helps the piston return after braking. A corroded piston defeats that return, and the pad stays in contact with the rotor.
Collapsed brake hose
An old rubber hose can deteriorate inside and act like a one-way valve, letting pressure reach the caliper but not letting it bleed back. The caliper gets blamed, but a new caliper will drag just like the old one. If a corner drags and briefly cracking the bleeder frees the wheel, suspect the hose. Replacement brake hoses are inexpensive insurance while you are already doing caliper work.
Wrong pads or hardware
GM's manual warns that installing the wrong replacement brake parts, such as pads that are wrong for the vehicle, can change the balance between front and rear brakes. Worn clips that have lost their spring can also cause drag that looks like a caliper fault.
Rebuild or Replace the Caliper
Brembo's position is straightforward: where inspection shows only specific parts are worn, a repair kit with new seals and dust covers restores the caliper; where damage is extensive, replace the whole caliper. In practice on a CTS:
- Service or rebuild when the problem is slide pins, pin boots or a torn dust boot with a clean, smooth piston.
- Replace the caliper when the piston is pitted or scored, the bore is corroded, the bleeder is seized or snapped, or the caliper is leaking. A remanufactured or new caliper is usually faster and more reliable than cleaning up a corroded bore at home. Browse replacement brake calipers and remanufactured units from Cardone.
- CTS-V Brembo calipers are fixed, multi-piston units. They have no slide pins, so a sticking CTS-V corner almost always traces back to a piston, seal or hose. Seal kits exist, but a multi-piston rebuild takes care to keep every seal seated correctly.
Replace calipers in axle pairs when the second one is also old or showing the same symptoms, so both sides of the car apply evenly.
What to Replace at the Same Time
A dragging caliper usually damages what it has been rubbing on. While the wheel is off, plan to address:
- Pads. Overheated pads glaze and lose bite. GM says brake pads should be replaced as complete sets. For the second-generation CTS 3.6L, we carry EBC Redstuff ceramic front pads for the 2008-2013 CTS 3.6L; CTS-V owners can look at Hawk HPS 5.0 front pads for the 2008-2014 CTS-V. More options are in our brake pads collection.
- Rotors. Heat from constant drag causes blue spots, uneven pad deposits and vibration. If the rotor is discolored, grooved or below minimum thickness, replace it. See brake rotors.
- Hardware. New abutment clips, pin boots and fresh lubricant are the cheapest part of the job and prevent a repeat. See brake hardware kits.
- Fluid. After opening the system, bleed the caliper with new DOT 3 fluid from a sealed container, as the manual specifies. If the fluid is dark, this is a good time to flush the whole system.
How Hard the Job Is
On a second-generation CTS with sliding calipers, swapping a front caliper is a moderate DIY job: lift and support the car safely, remove the wheel, pinch off or plug the hose, disconnect the hose fitting and the caliper bolts, install the new caliper with new sealing washers, and bleed that corner. Torque the caliper bolts, bracket bolts and wheel nuts to the values in the factory service information; GM's manual also says to tighten wheel nuts evenly in the proper sequence.
Rear calipers on 2014-2016 cars take more thought because of the Electric Parking Brake. The parking brake on an EPB caliper is applied electrically, so do not force the rear piston back with a clamp. Use the retract or service procedure in the factory service information, which normally involves a scan tool, before you pull the pads. GM's manual also notes the EPB cannot be applied or released without enough electrical power, so keep the battery healthy during the job.
CTS-V Brembo work is not harder to wrench on, but the parts are specific and bleeding a multi-piston caliper properly takes patience.

Is there a recall for brake calipers on the 2008-2016 Cadillac CTS?
No caliper recall appears in NHTSA recall data for these model years. The brake-related recalls in that range were a 2012 CTS vacuum brake booster pushrod retention nut that may not have been torqued to specification (11V536000) and a 2015 ATS and CTS bracket between the brake pedal and its actuating rod that could fracture (15V358000). Run your VIN on nhtsa.gov to confirm your own car.
Can I drive with a sticking caliper?
Not for long. A caliper that does not release overheats the pad, rotor and fluid on that corner, which can lead to fade and a pull under braking. Get it fixed as soon as you notice the symptoms.
Should I replace both calipers or just one?
If only one caliper has a clear fault and the other is in good shape, one is acceptable. On a car of this age, most owners replace both on the axle so braking stays even side to side. Pads should always be replaced as a complete set.
What brake fluid does the Cadillac CTS use?
The owner manuals for both the 2010 and 2014 CTS call for DOT 3 brake fluid, new from a sealed container. GM warns that the wrong fluid can badly damage brake hydraulic parts.
Why is my new caliper still dragging?
Check the flexible brake hose for internal collapse, confirm the slide pins move freely, and make sure the pad clips are seated correctly. A new caliper cannot fix a hose that is holding pressure.
Do CTS-V Brembo calipers need a different repair?
Yes, in the sense that they are fixed multi-piston calipers with no slide pins. Sticking on a CTS-V points at pistons, seals or hoses rather than pins.
