When to Replace the Drum vs Just the Shoes

• Grooved friction surface — visible grooves you can catch a fingernail in mean the drum has reached end of life
• Blue heat-tint spots — hot spots from a stuck shoe or seized parking brake heated the drum past temper
• Below discard thickness — inside diameter engraved on the drum; measure with a drum micrometer, replace at or below the discard number
• Cracks visible on the friction surface or hub area — always replace immediately, catastrophic failure imminent
• Original drums past 100k miles — even if visually acceptable, the metal has fatigued and heat capacity is reduced

Install Notes

• Replace drums in pairs — never a new drum on one side and old on the other
• Clean the drum's friction surface with brake cleaner before install (removes shipping protectant)
• Bed new shoes to new drums: 8-10 medium stops from 30 to 5 mph, then let cool
• Adjust the shoe-to-drum clearance via the star wheel after install
• Torque rear wheel lug nuts to Tacoma spec (83 lb-ft 2005-2015 / 85 lb-ft 2016-2023)
