When replacing a wheel hub or bearing assembly, getting the torque right is not optional - it directly affects how long the bearing lasts and whether the wheel stays safe. Here is why wheel hub torque matters.
Axle nut torque sets bearing preload
On many hubs the axle nut sets the bearing preload - too loose and the bearing has play and fails early; too tight and it binds and overheats. The factory torque spec is engineered for the correct preload, which is why guessing ruins a new bearing; see signs of a bad hub bearing.
Hub bolts hold it to the knuckle
The bolts securing the hub to the steering knuckle must be at full spec so the hub cannot loosen or shift under cornering loads. A loose hub is a serious safety issue - it can lead to wheel wobble or worse.
Clean, flat mating surfaces
Torque only does its job if the hub seats flat - rust or debris on the knuckle face causes runout and uneven clamping, which can mimic a warped rotor. Clean the surface before install so the torque holds the hub true.
Do it right
Use a torque wrench for both the axle nut and hub bolts, follow the spec exactly, and replace both sides on high-mileage vehicles. Inspect the brakes while you are there; see check the caliper. Keep the brakes fresh with quality pads and hardware.
