Brake judder is the rhythmic shudder, vibration, or pulsation you feel through the brake pedal, steering wheel, or whole car when you slow down - especially from highway speed. It is one of the most common brake complaints. Here is what actually causes it.
What judder feels like
Judder is a cyclic vibration that appears only under braking and grows with speed - a pulsing in the pedal, a shimmy in the wheel, or a shudder through the seat. Because it comes and goes with brake application, it points to the rotors and their contact with the pads, not to tires or general wheel balance, which vibrate all the time.
The real cause: thickness variation, not "warping"
Most judder is caused by disc thickness variation (DTV) - the rotor is very slightly thicker in some spots than others, so the pads clamp harder and softer as it spins, producing the pulse. Why it develops
Thickness variation grows from runout (a rotor not spinning perfectly flat, often from rust or dirt at the hat), from uneven pad deposits left by hard stops or skipped bedding, or from a sticking caliper wearing one area. Clean mounting surfaces and proper bedding prevent most of it.
Fixing judder
Mild judder from deposits can sometimes be cleaned up by a hard bedding cycle, but established thickness variation usually means resurfacing or replacing the rotors - see resurface vs replace. Fit rotors as a pair with fresh pads and hardware, and bed them in properly to keep judder from returning.
