What Causes Brake Dust (and How to Keep Wheels Clean)

That dark film that builds up on your wheels is brake dust - and it is completely normal. But some cars make far more than others, and the type of brake pad is usually the reason. Here is what is going on and how to cut it down.

What brake dust actually is

Every time you brake, a tiny amount of the pad's friction material and rotor wears away. Those fine particles - mostly pad material, plus some iron from the rotor - land on your wheels as brake dust. It is the natural byproduct of the friction that stops your car, so you cannot eliminate it entirely.

Why some pads make more dust

  • Semi-metallic pads contain a lot of metal and tend to produce more visible, darker dust, and they are a bit harder on rotors.
  • Ceramic pads produce less dust, and what they do make is lighter colored and less likely to stick to the wheel. That is a big reason ceramic is the default on modern daily drivers.
