A sticking brake caliper is a caliper that fails to fully release after you lift off the brake pedal, so the pad stays pressed against the rotor and drags. The most common symptoms are the vehicle pulling to one side, a burning or chemical smell after driving, one wheel that is much hotter than the others, reduced fuel economy, and uneven or heavily worn pads on the affected corner. What a sticking caliper actually is
A floating (single-piston) caliper works by squeezing the inner pad with a hydraulic piston while sliding on two greased pins to pull the outer pad in. When the caliper releases correctly, the piston retracts slightly and the caliper is free to float back off the rotor. "Sticking" means part of that release action is jammed: either the piston will not retract, or the caliper body will not slide. The result is constant friction, constant heat, and a wheel that is always partly braked even when your foot is off the pedal.
Symptoms, ranked from most to least common
- Pulling to one side. The dragging corner acts like a light, steady brake, so the car veers toward that side under acceleration and often tracks straight or pulls the other way under braking.
- Burning smell. Overheated pad material and grease give off a sharp, chemical, sometimes "hot metal" odor, strongest near the affected wheel after a short drive.
- One very hot wheel or hub. After a short trip, the dragging wheel is far hotter to the touch (use caution) than its opposite. Heat is the single most reliable tell.
- Reduced fuel economy and lack of power. The engine is fighting a constant brake, so the car feels sluggish and mileage drops.
- Uneven pad and rotor wear. The stuck side wears its pads dramatically faster and can blue or warp the rotor from heat.
- Vibration or a hot brake-fluid smell as the rotor overheats and fluid near the caliper approaches its boiling point, which produces a spongy pedal.
The most likely causes, most to least common
1. Seized or corroded slide pins (most common)
On floating calipers, the two guide pins ride in rubber boots packed with high-temperature grease. When a boot tears, water and road salt get in, the grease dries out, and the pins rust in place. The caliper can no longer slide, so it clamps the inner pad but never fully releases the outer one. This is by far the most frequent cause and often shows up as one pad far more worn than its mate on the same wheel.
2. A sticking caliper piston
Corrosion or a torn piston dust boot lets the piston bind in its bore, so it will not retract after braking. Rust on the piston or a swollen piston seal keeps constant pressure on the pads. This tends to drag hard and heat up fast.
3. A collapsed or restricted brake hose
Rubber brake hoses degrade internally with age. A flap of deteriorated liner can act as a one-way valve, letting fluid push out to the caliper but not letting it return. The caliper then stays applied. A useful test: if the wheel is dragging and cracking the bleeder open releases it, the problem is upstream in the hose or line, not the caliper itself.
4. Corroded hardware or a stuck parking-brake mechanism
Rusted, missing, or misinstalled caliper abutment clips and shims can bind the pads in their brackets so they cannot slide back. On rear calipers with an integrated parking brake, a seized cable or actuator arm can hold the caliper applied even after the lever is released.
How to tell the causes apart
Raise the wheel safely and spin it by hand. Heavy, even drag on a rear wheel points toward the parking-brake mechanism or piston. If cracking the caliper bleeder relieves the drag, suspect a bad hose. If the caliper body will not rock or slide on its pins, the slides are seized. If the piston will not push back with a c-clamp and old pad, the piston is the culprit. Comparing inner-versus-outer pad thickness is the fastest field clue: a big inner/outer difference on one wheel is a classic seized-slide-pin signature.
How urgent is it?
Stop driving now if the wheel is smoking, smells strongly of burning, is too hot to stay near, is hard to turn, or the pedal has gone soft, because that heat can vaporize brake fluid and cost you the brakes. Short, careful drive to a shop is usually acceptable for a mild pull with no smoke or smell, but do not let it sit; a mild drag ruins pads and rotors quickly and gets worse, not better. When in doubt, treat it as urgent, because a runaway sticking caliper is a genuine safety issue.
How it is fixed
The repair depends on the cause. Seized slide pins are cured by cleaning or replacing the pins and boots and re-lubricating with proper high-temp caliper grease, ideally with fresh caliper hardware and abutment clips. A bound piston or torn boot usually means a rebuilt or new replacement brake caliper, since a piston that has rusted in its bore rarely serves reliably again. A collapsed hose is replaced and the system bled. Because heat from the drag frequently damages the friction surfaces, it is smart to inspect and often replace the pads and rotor on that corner at the same time and bleed fresh fluid.
