Symptoms of a Bad Brake Master Cylinder

The clearest symptom of a bad brake master cylinder is a brake pedal that slowly sinks to the floor under steady foot pressure, even though you see no fluid leaking anywhere. Other common signs are a spongy or gradually softening pedal, an unexplained drop in the brake fluid reservoir, a lit brake warning light, and brakes that feel weak or drag. Because the master cylinder is the single hydraulic pump behind your entire brake system, a failing one is one of the more urgent problems on a vehicle and should be diagnosed before you keep driving.

What the master cylinder actually does

When you press the brake pedal, a pushrod moves a set of pistons inside the master cylinder, which forces brake fluid through the lines to each wheel. Modern master cylinders are "dual circuit": they contain two separate pressure chambers and two reservoir sections so that if one circuit fails, the other still stops the car. Failure usually happens inside the bore, where rubber piston seals wear, swell, or tear over time. 3. Brake fluid loss with no visible leak

If the reservoir keeps dropping but the ground stays dry and the lines and calipers are clean, fluid can be escaping past the rear seal into the brake booster. Pull the vacuum booster hose and look for fluid, or check for fluid pooling where the master cylinder bolts to the booster. 5. Contaminated or dark brake fluid
