What the brake booster actually does
The vacuum brake booster is a large round canister mounted between the firewall and the master cylinder. When you press the pedal, that pressure difference multiplies your effort several times over and pushes on the master cylinder. Lose the boost and the brakes still work hydraulically, but you have to supply all the force yourself, which is far more than most drivers expect.

1. Hard, stiff brake pedal (most common)
If the pedal suddenly feels like a brick and the car barely slows for the effort, the booster is not multiplying your force. This is the single most common booster complaint. It usually points to lost vacuum, a torn internal diaphragm, or a failed check valve.
2. Longer stopping distances
Less assist means less clamping force at the calipers for the same pedal push. You may not notice it in gentle driving but will in a hard stop. Treat any unexplained loss of braking power as urgent.
3. A hissing sound when braking
A steady hiss from the pedal area as you press or release usually means air is leaking past a cracked vacuum hose, a bad grommet, or a torn diaphragm inside the booster itself. Hissing plus a hard pedal strongly suggests the booster.
4. Engine stumbles, stalls, or idles rough when braking
A ruptured diaphragm or a stuck-open check valve lets unmetered air leak into the intake through the booster. The engine leans out and may buck or stall the moment you hit the brakes. This is a strong booster-specific clue because a worn master cylinder does not affect engine vacuum.
5. A pedal that sits too high or feels grabby
A booster with a stuck valve or a pushrod adjusted too long can hold slight pressure on the master cylinder, so the pedal sits high, the brakes drag, or they grab early. Dragging brakes can overheat and cause pulling.

- Lost engine vacuum (most common): a cracked or disconnected vacuum hose, a collapsed line, or a failing vacuum pump on diesels and many modern gas engines. Cheapest and first thing to check.

- Leaking master cylinder (looks similar, different fix): internal seal failure lets the pedal sink slowly to the floor under steady pressure. This is a master cylinder problem, not a booster problem, even though the pedal feel changes.
- Hydro-boost or electric pump failure: on trucks and some newer cars the assist comes from power-steering pressure or an electric pump. A whining pump or a warning light points here.
How to tell them apart
A simple driveway test isolates most booster faults. With the engine off, pump the brake pedal five or six times to bleed off all stored vacuum. Hold firm pressure on the pedal and start the engine. If the booster is good, the pedal will sink slightly as vacuum returns and assist kicks in. If the pedal stays rock-hard, the booster or its vacuum supply is the culprit. Next, listen for hissing and check the vacuum hose and check valve before condemning the booster itself. If instead the pedal slowly drops to the floor while you hold steady pressure, suspect the master cylinder.
How urgent is it?
Any loss of braking assist reduces your ability to stop, so drive with extreme caution and leave far more following distance. A hard pedal that still stops the car with heavy effort is drivable to a shop at low speed, but do not put it off. A pedal that sinks to the floor, brakes that drag and smoke, or an engine that stalls in traffic are stop-now situations. Get the car towed rather than risk it.

The repair depends on the cause. A cracked vacuum hose or bad check valve is an inexpensive part swap. A torn diaphragm or internally failed booster means replacing the booster assembly, which usually involves removing the master cylinder to reach it.
