You go to drive off, release the parking brake, and the car resists - or a rear wheel drags. A stuck parking brake is a common problem, especially in cold, wet, or salty climates. Here is why it happens and how it gets fixed.
Why parking brakes stick
- Frozen in cold weather. Moisture in the cable or mechanism freezes and locks it. This is the classic winter no-release.
- A corroded or seized cable. Road salt and water rust the cable inside its housing so it no longer slides back. This is the most common non-winter cause.
- Left on too long. A parking brake set for weeks can bind, or the shoes can rust to the drum.

Freeing a frozen brake
If it is simply frozen, warming the car - moving it to a heated garage, or waiting for temperatures to rise - often releases it. Gently cycling the brake on and off can help. Never force the car forward hard against a locked brake.
Freeing a seized cable
A corroded cable usually needs mechanical attention: cycling the lever several times, working penetrating lubricant into the cable, and in many cases replacing the cable if it will not free up and move smoothly again. A cable that has rusted internally is on borrowed time and is best replaced.
Do not just ignore it
Driving with a dragging parking brake overheats that wheel, wears the rear pads or shoes, and wastes fuel - similar to a sticking caliper.
