Cause 1: The pads have not finished breaking in (most common)
Fresh pads and rotors need a bedding-in process. This is where a thin, even layer of pad material transfers onto the rotor face. Until that transfer film is established, the two surfaces can chatter and squeak, especially in the first 100 to 300 miles. Some pads also ship with a protective coating that burns off during the first several stops and can squeak briefly.
How to tell
The squeak is intermittent, comes and goes with temperature, and is gradually getting quieter over days of driving. There is no grinding and the pedal feels firm.

Safe to drive. Complete a proper bed-in: from about 35 mph, brake firmly (not to a stop) roughly 8 to 10 times, then drive a few minutes without riding the brakes to let them cool. Avoid holding the pedal at a full stop while the brakes are hot during this period, which can leave a deposit that causes squeak or pulsation.
Cause 2: Hard semi-metallic pad compound
Pad material dictates how much noise a brake makes. Semi-metallic pads contain a high percentage of steel and iron fibers. They bite hard and handle heat well, but they are inherently noisier and can squeak even when everything is installed correctly. This is the number-two reason a brand-new brake job still sings.
How to tell
The squeak is consistent, does not fade after break-in, and the pads were sold as semi-metallic or severe-duty. Braking performance is otherwise strong.
Urgency and fix

When an installer reuses old, rusted clips or omits the shims, the pad can vibrate freely and ring.
How to tell
The squeak is present from day one, does not improve with break-in, and may change or stop briefly when you press the brake harder. You may also hear a light rattle over bumps.
Urgency and fix

Cause 4: No lubrication on the caliper contact points

Dry contact points let the pad vibrate and let slide pins stick, both of which cause squeak. Grease belongs only on those metal contact surfaces, never on the rotor face or the pad friction material.

Squeak started right after the job, and the pads and hardware are correct. Often paired with a slightly uneven feel if a slide pin is dragging.
Urgency and fix
Safe to drive short term. The fix is to pull the pads, clean the contact points, and apply proper synthetic brake lubricant to the ears, clip contacts, and slide pins. Reassemble and torque the caliper bracket to spec.
Cause 5: Glazed rotors or a warped surface
If rotors were reused, overheated during break-in, or came already glazed, the pad rides on a slick, hardened surface that squeaks and can pulsate. A hard stop from highway speed while the brakes are hot can also lay down uneven deposits.
How to tell
Squeak comes with a shiny, blue-tinged rotor face, and you may feel pulsation through the pedal or steering wheel under braking.
Urgency and fix
Safe to drive if the pedal is firm; stop sooner if you feel strong pulsation. Light glazing can sometimes be removed by re-bedding. Deep glazing or a warped rotor calls for resurfacing or, more often, replacement.
When squeaking means stop now
Most squeaks are a comfort issue, not a danger. Pull over and get it inspected right away if the squeak turns into metal-on-metal grinding, if the brake pedal feels soft, spongy, or drops toward the floor, if the car pulls hard to one side when braking, or if you smell burning after a short drive. Those symptoms point to a dragging caliper, a hydraulic problem, or friction material worn through, none of which should wait.

Work through the causes in order: finish the break-in, confirm the pad compound suits your driving, verify fresh hardware and shims are installed, and make sure every contact point is greased.
