What Is the Master Cylinder Pushrod?

Between your brake booster and the master cylinder sits a small, precisely-sized rod that most drivers never hear about - until it causes trouble. The master cylinder pushrod transfers your pedal effort into hydraulic pressure, and its length has to be just right. Here is what it does and why it matters.

What the pushrod does

When you press the pedal, the brake booster amplifies the force and passes it through the pushrod into the back of the master cylinder. The rod pushes the master cylinder's internal piston forward, which pressurizes the brake fluid and sends it to the calipers. It is the mechanical handoff between the boost stage and the hydraulic stage.

Why length is critical

The pushrod must have a tiny amount of clearance. Too long, and it holds the master-cylinder piston slightly forward even at rest - that blocks the fluid return port, so pressure cannot bleed off and the brakes drag or lock as they heat up. When it comes up

Pushrod length is mainly a concern after replacing a booster or master cylinder, especially with mismatched or aftermarket parts. Many rods are adjustable and are set with a simple gauge to the correct depth. If a car develops dragging brakes right after a booster or master swap, the pushrod adjustment is the first thing to check.

Not a wear part

The pushrod itself rarely wears out - it is an adjustment issue, not a replacement item, for most drivers.
