Before you reuse a brake rotor or decide to resurface it, you need to know how thick it is. Measuring rotor thickness is quick with the right tool and tells you whether the rotor is safe or needs to be replaced. Here is how to do it.
What you need
Use an outside micrometer. A standard caliper will not read accurately across a rotor because the rotor face often wears a ridge at the outer edge, and the caliper's flat jaws sit on that ridge. A micrometer with a rounded or pointed anvil reaches into the worn friction surface where it actually matters.
How to measure
- Find the rotor's minimum thickness spec - it is stamped or cast on the rotor, often marked "min th" or "discard." See rotor minimum thickness.
- Clean the rotor face so dust and rust do not throw off the reading.
- Measure the friction surface - not the outer ridge - at several points around the rotor, roughly at the middle of the swept area.
- Take readings at 6 to 8 spots around the disc and note the smallest one.
What the numbers tell you
- Below the minimum thickness spec: the rotor must be replaced - do not resurface or reuse it.
- Above minimum but marginal: there may not be enough material to safely resurface; replacement is often the practical call.
- Thickness varies a lot between points (thickness variation): that unevenness causes a pulsing pedal - see brake pedal pulsation.
The bottom line
A quick micrometer check prevents the mistake of bolting fresh pads onto an unsafe rotor. When a rotor is at or below minimum, replace rotors in axle pairs and fit new pads and hardware.
