To check your brake pad thickness, look through the openings in your wheel and measure the remaining friction material against the metal backing plate. A new brake pad has roughly 10 to 12 millimeters (about 3/8 to 1/2 inch) of friction material. You should plan to replace the pads when the material wears down to about 3 mm (1/8 inch), and replace them without delay at 2 mm or less. If the pads look thinner than the metal backing plate they are attached to, they are worn out and need immediate attention.
What Counts as "The Pad" You're Measuring
A brake pad is made of two parts: a steel backing plate and the friction material bonded to it. When people talk about pad thickness, they mean the friction material only, not the backing plate. That friction layer is the wear item. A typical steel backing plate is around 5 to 6 mm thick and does not wear, so do not include it in your measurement or you will badly overestimate how much life you have left.
The numbers that matter
- 10 to 12 mm: Brand new pad, full friction material.
- 6 to 7 mm: Roughly half worn. Keep an eye on them, no rush.
- 3 to 4 mm: Time to shop and plan replacement soon.
- 2 mm or less: Replace now. Braking distance and heat capacity are compromised.
- Below 1.5 mm: Many wear sensors trigger here, and you risk metal-on-rotor contact.
Three Ways to Check Without a Full Teardown
1. Look through the wheel spokes
On most vehicles you can see the outer brake pad pressed against the rotor through the gaps in the wheel. Use a flashlight. You are looking at the friction block sitting in the caliper. If it looks like a thin wafer compared to the rotor and backing plate, it is worn. This method is quick but only shows the outer pad, and viewing angles can be deceiving.
2. Use a pad gauge or a coin
An inexpensive brake pad gauge measures the material directly and is the most accurate no-removal method. No gauge handy? A U.S. quarter can serve as a rough reference: the silver edge border is close to 3 mm. If the pad material is thinner than that border, you are at or past the replacement point.
3. Pull the wheel for a real measurement
For an honest number, loosen the lug nuts, safely raise the vehicle on a jack and jack stands, and remove the wheel. Now the caliper and both pads are fully visible. Measure the friction material on each pad with a caliper or gauge, and check the inner pad, which often wears faster than the outer one on a sliding-caliper design. While you are in there, inspect the rotor surface too.
Warning Signs You Can Notice While Driving
Thickness is the definitive test, but your car gives clues between inspections:
- High-pitched squeal: Most pads have a small metal wear indicator that scrapes the rotor and squeals around the 3 mm mark to warn you.
- Grinding or growling: A harsh metallic grind usually means the friction material is gone and the backing plate is contacting the rotor. Stop driving on these.
- Dashboard brake wear light: Many European and newer vehicles use electronic sensors that light up the dash when pads reach their limit.
- Longer stopping distances or a soft, deeper pedal: Reduced braking confidence can point to worn pads or other brake issues.
What Changes How Fast Pads Wear
There is no single mileage number, but most pads last somewhere between 25,000 and 65,000 miles. Several factors move that window:
- Driving style: Frequent hard braking and stop-and-go city traffic wear pads far faster than steady highway miles.
- Front vs. rear: Front pads typically handle 60 to 70 percent of braking force and wear out first, often about twice as fast as the rears.
- Pad material: Ceramic and quality semi-metallic compounds generally last longer and run cleaner than cheap organic pads.
- Vehicle weight and towing: Heavier trucks, SUVs, and towing loads increase wear.
- Terrain: Hilly or mountain driving means more braking and faster wear.
Don't Forget the Rotors
Pad thickness is only half the story. If you let pads grind down to metal, you can score or gouge the rotors, which then need resurfacing or replacement. Rotors also have a minimum thickness stamped on the hub or edge, and worn rotors cause vibration and pulsing in the pedal. When you replace pads, inspect the rotor faces for deep grooves, hot spots, or a pronounced lip at the outer edge.
