To change brake pads, loosen the lug nuts and lift the wheel off, remove the two caliper slide bolts, lift the caliper off the rotor, slide out the old pads, compress the caliper piston, install the new pads with fresh hardware, reinstall the caliper, torque everything to spec, and bed in the pads with a series of controlled stops. Most people replace pads one axle at a time, and a single axle takes a mechanically confident DIYer about 45 to 90 minutes. Front and rear are separate jobs because they usually wear at different rates.
This guide walks through the job on a typical disc-brake car or light truck. Read it fully before you start, and if anything below your comfort level appears (seized caliper, deeply scored rotor, a parking brake integrated into the rear caliper), it is fine to stop and hand it to a shop.
What You Will Need
- A floor jack and two jack stands rated for your vehicle's weight
- Lug wrench or breaker bar, plus a torque wrench for reassembly
- A socket and ratchet set (caliper bolts are often 12–19 mm; brackets larger)
- A C-clamp or caliper piston compressor
- A wire brush, brake parts cleaner, and high-temperature brake grease
- A new set of quality ceramic brake pads and, ideally, a fresh brake hardware kit for that axle
Do not reuse worn abutment clips and shims. New hardware is inexpensive and prevents the number-one cause of comeback noise: pads binding in tired, rusted slides.
Step 1: Loosen, Lift, and Secure
With the vehicle on level ground and the parking brake set (for front jobs), crack the lug nuts loose while the tire is still on the ground. Jack the car up, lower it onto jack stands at the manufacturer's lift points, and never work under a car held only by a jack. Remove the wheel and set it under the rocker as a backup.
Step 2: Inspect Before You Touch Anything
Look at the rotor surface. Light polishing lines are normal; deep grooves you can catch a fingernail in, a hard lip at the outer edge, or blue heat spots mean the rotor should be replaced or measured against its minimum-thickness spec (stamped on the rotor hat, usually within 1–2 mm of new). New pads on a badly worn rotor will chatter and wear fast. Check that the flexible brake hose is not cracked and the piston boot is intact.
Step 3: Remove the Caliper
Remove the two caliper slide (guide) bolts. On many vehicles the caliper pivots up on a single bolt so you can inspect; on others both bolts come out. Lift the caliper off the rotor and support it with a wire hook or bungee from the coil spring. Never let it hang by the rubber hose—that damages the line internally. Slide the old pads out of the bracket and note how the wear-indicator clip and any shims were oriented.
Step 4: Compress the Piston
Pushing the piston back into the caliper makes room for the thicker new pads. Open the brake fluid reservoir cap first so displaced fluid has somewhere to go, and place an old pad against the piston to spread the load from your C-clamp. Compress slowly. Important exception: many rear calipers with an integrated parking brake do not push in—they must be threaded in clockwise with a dedicated tool. Forcing those with a clamp destroys the mechanism.
Step 5: Clean and Grease the Hardware
Wire-brush the bracket abutment surfaces where the pads slide. Install the new abutment clips from your hardware kit, then apply a thin film of high-temp brake grease to the clip contact points, the back of the pads where they meet the piston and caliper fingers, and the guide pins (re-boot them if the pins looked dry). Keep grease off the friction surface and the rotor. Clean, lubricated slides are what keep new brakes quiet.
Step 6: Install Pads and Reassemble
Seat the new pads into the bracket, with the wear-indicator tab positioned as the old one was (typically inboard, trailing edge). Set the caliper back over the pads and start the slide bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading. Torque the guide bolts and bracket bolts to the values in your service manual—guide bolts are commonly 25–35 lb-ft and bracket bolts 80–130 lb-ft, but figures vary widely by vehicle, so look yours up. Reinstall the wheel and torque the lug nuts in a star pattern, usually 80–100 lb-ft for passenger cars.
Step 7: Pump the Pedal, Then Bed In
Before you drive anywhere, pump the brake pedal firmly several times until it goes hard. The first pump or two will feel low because the piston was pushed back—this is normal and critical. Do not skip it. Top off the reservoir to the full line and check that the cap is secure.
Then bed in the new pads to transfer an even layer of friction material onto the rotor. A common procedure: from about 35 mph, brake firmly down to around 5 mph, six to eight times, then repeat a few harder stops from 45 mph, without coming to a complete stop between them. Follow with a few minutes of gentle driving to let the brakes cool. Proper bedding is the difference between quiet, strong brakes and a lifetime of squeal.
How Often and When to Replace
Brake pads typically last 30,000 to 70,000 miles depending on driving style, vehicle weight, and pad compound. Replace them when the friction material is down to about 3 mm, when the built-in wear indicator squeals, or when you feel grinding—grinding means metal on metal and usually a ruined rotor. Always compare left to right; uneven wear points to a sticking caliper or seized slide pin that new pads alone will not fix.
