- Squealing, grinding, or longer stopping distances that continue after new pads.
Should You Replace Rotors With Every Pad Change?
Not always, but often it is the smart call. Pads and rotors wear as a pair, and installing fresh pads on worn, grooved rotors can cause noise, poor bite, and premature pad wear because the two surfaces never bed in fully. Measure the rotor at every pad job. If it is above the minimum thickness, in good shape, and within specification, new pads on the existing rotors are fine. If it is near the limit, scored, or pulsating, replace the rotors at the same time so the new pads seat against a true, flat surface.
Resurfacing (turning) rotors on a lathe used to be routine, but many of today's rotors are made thin from the factory and have too little material to machine safely. In many cases replacing the rotor outright is both safer and comparable in cost.
Always Replace in Axle Pairs
Replace rotors on the same axle together, both fronts or both rears, even if only one looks worn. Matched rotors keep braking even side to side and prevent the car from pulling under hard stops.
