For most drivers, a solid blank (smooth) rotor is the right choice: it stops just as well as drilled or slotted rotors in normal driving, runs quieter, wears pads more evenly, and costs less. What the rotor face actually does
A brake rotor is the metal disc your pads clamp against to turn motion into heat. In hard use, three things degrade braking: heat soaking into the rotor and pads (fade), gasses and dust building a glazed film between pad and rotor, and water or debris on the surface. Blank, slotted, and drilled faces are three different answers to those problems. None of them changes the basic physics much on a normal street stop from 60 mph. Where they differ is in repeated, heavy stops and in how they handle heat and surface contamination.
Blank (smooth) rotors
A blank rotor has a plain, uninterrupted braking surface. It is what the vast majority of vehicles leave the factory with, and for good reason.

- Quietest and lowest-vibration option, with no slot or hole edges to chirp or drum.

Cons
- Under sustained hard braking, gasses and dust have nowhere to vent, so a blank face can glaze or fade sooner than a slotted one.
- Plain looks; you will not see anything special through the wheel spokes.
Blanks are the default recommendation for commuters, family vehicles, and anyone who wants dependable braking with the fewest trade-offs. Vented (two-piece with internal cooling vanes) blank rotors are standard on the front of most vehicles and cool well on their own.
Slotted rotors
Slotted rotors have shallow grooves machined across the braking surface. As the pad sweeps over each slot, the slot scrapes away the thin layer of gas, dust, and glaze that builds up during hard stops, keeping the pad biting cleanly.

- Better resistance to brake fade in repeated heavy stops, which is why they are popular for towing, hauling, mountain driving, and track use.
- The slots continuously "de-glaze" the pad, helping maintain consistent bite when everything is hot.

Drilled rotors
Cross-drilled rotors have holes bored through the face. The idea comes from early racing, where soft pads outgassed heavily and the holes gave gasses somewhere to escape. Modern pads gas far less, so on today's cars drilled rotors are largely a styling and light-performance choice.

- Distinctive look through the wheel, which is a big part of their appeal.
- Slightly lighter and can feel a touch crisper when cold, and they clear water quickly in the wet.
- Good venting of gas and dust in light use.
Cons
- The drilled holes create stress points. Under sustained high heat, such as long mountain descents or track sessions, low-quality drilled rotors can develop cracks radiating from the holes.
- Less braking surface area than a blank, and reduced thermal mass.
- More expensive, and cracked rotors have to be replaced, not resurfaced.
Well-made, cast-in-hole (rather than drilled-after-casting) rotors from a reputable manufacturer hold up far better than cheap ones. Drilled rotors suit lighter vehicles, spirited street driving, and owners who value appearance. For heavy towing or repeated hard stops, slotted is the more durable pick, and drilled-and-slotted combines both patterns at a higher price with the drilled hole's crack risk still in play.
