What brake fluid actually does
Brake fluid is the hydraulic link between your foot and the brakes. When you press the pedal, the master cylinder pushes fluid through the lines to the calipers and wheel cylinders, which clamp the pads or shoes against the rotors and drums. Because liquid does not compress, that pressure transfers almost instantly. The catch is heat. Braking turns motion into thermal energy, and that heat soaks into the fluid. If the fluid gets hot enough to boil, it forms vapor, and vapor does compress. That is what causes a soft or sinking pedal when brakes are worked hard.
This is why boiling point is the headline spec for any brake fluid, and it is the number that separates DOT 3 from DOT 4.
Dry vs wet boiling point
Every DOT-rated fluid carries two boiling-point figures. The dry boiling point is for fresh fluid straight from a sealed container. The wet boiling point is measured after the fluid has absorbed about 3.7 percent water by volume, which roughly simulates a couple of years of real-world service. The minimum federal standards are:
- DOT 3: dry boiling point at least 401°F (205°C), wet at least 284°F (140°C).
- DOT 4: dry boiling point at least 446°F (230°C), wet at least 311°F (155°C).
Many name-brand fluids exceed these minimums, but the relationship holds: DOT 4 gives you more headroom before the fluid boils, especially the wet number that matters most as the fluid ages in your car.
Why moisture is the real enemy
Glycol-based brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls water vapor out of the air. Moisture enters slowly through seals, hoses, and the master cylinder reservoir. As water content climbs, the wet boiling point falls and internal corrosion becomes more likely. DOT 4 contains borate ester additives that give it a higher initial boiling point, but those same chemistry choices make it absorb water somewhat faster once the fluid is in service. In practice that means DOT 4 starts higher but can benefit from more frequent flushes. A good rule of thumb is to change DOT 3 roughly every 2 to 3 years and DOT 4 every 1 to 2 years, or on the interval your manufacturer lists.
Can you mix DOT 3 and DOT 4?
Yes. DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1 are all glycol-based and chemically compatible, so topping off DOT 3 with DOT 4 (or the reverse) will not damage your system. The important caution is direction. Moving up from DOT 3 to DOT 4 is fine and even raises your boiling point. Going the other way, replacing specified DOT 4 with DOT 3, lowers your heat tolerance below what the vehicle was designed for and is not recommended. One hard rule: never add DOT 5. DOT 5 is silicone-based, does not mix with glycol fluids, and will cause serious problems if combined with them. Do not confuse DOT 5 with DOT 5.1, which is glycol and compatible.

Most modern vehicles, European models, and anything with an active braking system specify DOT 4 or a low-viscosity variant, because ABS and stability-control pumps rely on the fluid's flow characteristics.
