Owners of hybrids and EVs often wonder whether their car needs a special brake fluid. In most cases the answer is no - but there are important details about how that fluid is maintained. Here is what to know.
Usually standard DOT fluid
The large majority of hybrids and EVs use conventional DOT 3, DOT 4, or similar glycol-based brake fluid - the same as gas cars. Always check the reservoir cap and owner's manual for the exact specification, but there is rarely an exotic hybrid-only fluid.
It still absorbs moisture

Change it on schedule anyway
Because moisture absorption is time-based, not mileage-based, hybrid and EV brake fluid should be flushed on the maker's schedule even if the pads have barely worn; see brake fluid change interval. Skipping it because "the brakes are hardly used" invites internal corrosion.
Watch the ABS unit
