More new cars use an electronic parking brake - a button instead of a lever or pedal. It is convenient and generally reliable, but like any electromechanical system it can fail in its own ways. Here is what to know about electric parking brakes.
How they differ from cable brakes
A traditional parking brake pulls a cable mechanically - see how the parking brake works. An electronic parking brake (EPB) instead uses small electric motors/actuators at the rear calipers, controlled by a button and a module. There is no cable to stretch, but there are electronics that can fault.
Common failure points
EPB problems usually come from a failed caliper actuator motor, corroded wiring or connectors at the rear, a low battery or voltage glitch confusing the module, or a software/module fault. Symptoms include a parking-brake warning light, a button that will not engage or release, or a clunking/whirring when you press it.
The service catch
The big practical difference at brake time: on many EPB cars you cannot just wind the rear caliper piston back by hand - you must put the system into a service/maintenance mode with a scan tool (or an on-screen menu) to retract the actuator before fitting pads; see caliper compression tool. Forcing it can damage the actuator.
Reliability and repair
EPBs are broadly reliable and free of cable stretch, but repairs can be pricier and often need a scan tool. If yours faults, have it scanned for the specific code. The underlying pads and rotors are still normal wear items - fit quality pads and fresh hardware when they are due.
