Why drilled rotors can crack

Drilling holes through a rotor removes material and creates stress concentration points around each hole. Under extreme, repeated heat cycling - like hard track use - tiny stress cracks can form at the hole edges and grow. Cheaper drilled rotors, where holes are drilled after casting rather than cast in, are more prone to this because the drilling can leave rough edges.

When they are perfectly fine

For normal street driving, quality drilled rotors on a lighter vehicle rarely see enough sustained heat to crack, and many drivers run them for years without issue. They can help in wet conditions and look great through the wheel. The risk rises with vehicle weight, towing, and track use - the very conditions that generate the most heat.
