Swapping rear drum brakes for discs is a common upgrade on classic cars, hot rods, and some towing rigs. It can improve braking feel and heat handling - but it is a bigger job than a pad change. Here are the basics of a disc conversion.

Why people convert to disc

Disc brakes handle heat better and resist fade more than drums, and they are easier to service - see drum vs disc brakes. On an older vehicle with rear drums, or one used for towing or performance, a rear disc conversion can give more consistent braking. It also modernizes an old braking system.

What a conversion involves

A conversion is more than bolt-on: it typically means new rear rotors, calipers, brackets, pads, and often a matched proportioning valve to balance front-to-rear pressure - since discs and drums apply differently. Some cars also need a different master cylinder or parking-brake provision, because the drum often housed the parking brake. It is a kit-and-know-how job.

Parts matter and balance matters

Getting the hydraulic balance right is critical - the wrong proportioning can make the rears lock or under-apply. Is it worth it?
