Front-wheel-drive cars can make noise from either a worn CV axle or a bad wheel bearing, and they are near each other. The sounds are different, though. Here is how to tell CV axle noise from a wheel bearing.
CV axle: clicking on turns
A worn outer CV joint makes a distinct clicking or popping when you turn, especially sharp turns at low speed (like a parking lot). The click is rhythmic with wheel speed and worst at full steering lock - a giveaway for the CV joint, not the bearing.
Wheel bearing: humming that changes with turns
A bad wheel bearing makes a humming or growling that rises with speed and gets louder or quieter as you turn (load shifting across it); see signs of a bad hub bearing and bearing vs tire noise. It is a drone, not a click.
Vibration clues
A failing CV axle can cause a vibration under acceleration; a bad bearing causes a steady speed-related hum and sometimes wheel play. Check for a torn CV boot (grease slung around) as a strong CV clue.
Confirm and fix
Test by driving slow figure-eights (CV clicks) and checking wheel play and spin roughness (bearing); see how to check a bearing. Replace the worn part and torque to spec. Keep the brakes fresh with quality pads and hardware.
