Copper Grease vs Ceramic Brake Grease

At brake time you will see references to copper grease (copper anti-seize) and ceramic brake grease, and it is easy to use the wrong one in the wrong place. They are different products for different jobs. Here is which belongs where.

What each grease is

Copper anti-seize is a metallic paste that prevents parts from seizing and galling under high heat - it is an anti-seize, not really a lubricant. Ceramic brake grease (and silicone-based synthetic brake grease) is a high-temperature lubricant designed to stay put, resist water, and not harm rubber. Both tolerate brake heat but do different jobs - see where to apply brake grease.

Where copper anti-seize goes

Copper anti-seize is best on threaded and metal-to-metal contact points that must not seize - like caliper bracket bolts, bleeder screw threads, and sometimes the back of the pad's contact ears (sparingly). It keeps hardware from rusting solid so the next brake job is not a fight. Keep it OFF rubber and off the friction surfaces.

Where ceramic/synthetic brake grease goes

The lubricating grease belongs on the moving, rubber-adjacent parts: caliper slide pins and their boots, and pad abutment/contact points where the pad slides. Because it is rubber-safe and stays put under heat, it keeps the caliper floating freely so pads wear evenly - preventing the tapered wear of a sticking caliper.

The simple rule

Use rubber-safe ceramic/synthetic grease on slide pins and pad contact points; use copper anti-seize on threads and metal fasteners. Never put any grease on the rotor face or pad friction material. Clean first with brake cleaner, grease the right spots, then assemble with quality pads and fresh hardware.
