Flat-towing - towing a car on all four wheels behind an RV or truck - is common with some gas vehicles. With electric cars, it is usually a bad idea. Here is what to know about flat-towing an EV.
Why most EVs cannot be flat-towed
In an EV, the drive wheels are permanently connected to the electric motor. Rolling those wheels spins the motor, which can generate electricity and heat with no way to manage it - potentially damaging the motor or electronics. Check the manual first
Always consult the owner's manual - a few EVs allow limited flat-towing or have a special tow mode, but many explicitly prohibit it. Assuming it is fine because a gas car could be flat-towed can cause expensive damage.
The safe way to tow an EV
The recommended method is a flatbed tow truck that lifts all four wheels off the ground, or wheel dollies under the drive wheels. This keeps the drive wheels from turning the motor. Do not drag an EV with two wheels down unless the manual specifically allows it.
