When a wheel-speed (ABS) sensor fails, the ABS light comes on and you may wonder if it is safe to drive. Your normal brakes still work, but you lose an important safety layer. Here is what to know.
Your base brakes still work
A failed ABS sensor disables the anti-lock function, but your regular hydraulic brakes work normally - you can still stop; see how ABS works and wheel-speed sensor. So short-term driving is possible, unlike a hydraulic failure.
What you lose
Without ABS, hard braking on a slippery surface can lock the wheels, lengthening stops and reducing steering control; see ABS warning light. Traction and stability control usually go offline too, since they share the sensor.
Why fix it soon
ABS matters most in an emergency stop or bad weather - exactly when you cannot predict needing it. A bad sensor is usually a cheap fix (often just the sensor or wiring), so there is little reason to leave it.
