Why Are My Brakes Squeaking or Squealing?

  • Safe to keep driving, plan a fix: a steady squeal from the wear indicator, or a light squeal that fades after your first stops in the morning. Get pads checked within days to a couple of weeks.
  • Fix soon: squealing that comes with more brake dust, longer stopping distances, or a pedal that feels different. This points to glazing, a sticking caliper, or worn hardware.
  • Stop driving now: a harsh metallic grinding or a grinding you feel through the pedal. That is the steel pad backing or rivets cutting into the rotor. Continuing damages or destroys the rotor and can compromise your ability to stop.

Worn or glazed pads are replaced, and the rotors are measured against the minimum-thickness spec stamped on them. If the rotors are grooved, below spec, or already grinding, they are replaced too, because new pads on a damaged rotor will just be noisy again.
