Your dashboard has two separate brake-related warning lights, and they mean very different things. Confusing them leads to the wrong worry or the wrong fix. Here is how to tell the red brake light from the amber ABS light.
The red BRAKE light
The red brake warning light flags the base (foundation) braking system. A red brake light with a firm pedal is often just the parking brake or low fluid, but it can signal a serious leak.
The amber ABS light
The amber ABS light means the anti-lock braking system has a fault and has disabled itself - usually a wheel-speed sensor or wiring issue; see ABS warning light meaning and how ABS works. Your normal brakes still work fully; you have only lost the anti-lock function.
Why the difference matters
The red light points to the fundamental hydraulic brakes - potentially urgent (a leak). The amber light points to an electronic assist - important but your base brakes are intact. Knowing which is on tells you how worried to be and where to look.
When both are on
If BOTH light up together, that can indicate a more significant fault (sometimes the ABS/traction system detecting a hydraulic problem) and deserves prompt diagnosis. Either way, keep the base brakes healthy with quality pads, fresh fluid, and good hardware.
