A brake warning light usually means one of three things: your parking brake is still engaged, your brake fluid is low, or the system has detected a hydraulic pressure fault. 5. Brake pressure differential / proportioning valve fault
Many vehicles use a pressure-differential switch that compares the front and rear circuits. If one side loses pressure, the switch closes and lights the warning. 6. Faulty level sensor or switch (least common)

Likely safe to drive (with caution, get it checked soon): the light was caused by a parking brake that is now released, fluid that was slightly low from pad wear and is now topped off, or a confirmed sensor fault with a firm pedal. Stop now and do not drive: the pedal is soft, sinks, or goes to the floor; you see or smell leaking fluid; the fluid level keeps dropping; or the light came on suddenly along with reduced stopping power. When braking feels wrong, tow it. No errand is worth the risk of no brakes.
