Your brakes do not send equal pressure to all four wheels - and that is by design. The brake proportioning valve is the part that balances the split between front and rear, keeping your stops stable. Here is what it does.
Why brake balance matters
When you brake, weight shifts forward onto the front wheels, so the fronts can use more braking force while the rears have less grip. If the rear brakes got full pressure, the rear wheels could lock up first - and a locked rear end can cause the car to slide or spin. The proportioning valve prevents that by limiting rear brake pressure to match the reduced grip back there.
How it works
The proportioning valve sits in the brake lines feeding the rear brakes. Under hard braking it reduces the rate of pressure rise to the rear, so the fronts do more of the work and the rears do not lock prematurely. Some vehicles use a load-sensing version that adjusts the split based on how heavily the vehicle is loaded - useful on trucks. On modern cars, electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) within the ABS system often handles this job instead.
Signs of a problem
- Rear wheels locking up too easily under braking, or the car feeling unstable when you stop hard.
- A pull or imbalance that is not explained by the pads or a sticking caliper.
- A brake warning light in systems that monitor pressure balance.
What to do
The proportioning valve rarely fails, but when brake balance feels off and the usual suspects (pads, calipers, fluid) check out, it is worth having the valve and the ABS system diagnosed.
