Brake Hardware Corrosion (Rust Jacking) Explained

The small metal clips and shims in your brakes live in one of the harshest spots on the car - constant heat, water, and road salt. Over time they corrode, and that corrosion causes real problems. Here is what to know, especially if you drive where roads are salted.

What corroded hardware does

The stainless abutment clips give the brake pad a clean surface to slide on in the caliper bracket. When they rust and swell, they trap the pad so it cannot move freely. The results are familiar: noise, uneven pad wear, a dragging brake, and a pad that will not release fully - much like a sticking caliper. Rust jacking

Rust jacking happens when corrosion builds up under a part - commonly between a brake pad's steel backing plate and its shim, or in the bracket slots. Rust takes up more volume than the metal it forms from, so it physically pushes parts apart. On a pad, that can lift or crack the friction material off the backing plate. In the bracket, it pinches the pad. It is a slow, hidden process that shows up as noise or dragging.

Why salt-belt cars need extra care

The fix is cheap and easy

Always install a fresh brake hardware kit with new pads, clean the bracket seats down to clean metal, and add a thin film of high-temp brake grease at the contact points - see where to apply brake grease.
