Do Caliper Bolts Need a Torque Spec?

Caliper guide-pin bolts and caliper bracket bolts each have a manufacturer torque specification, and following it matters more than on many other fasteners. Guessing by feel risks a loose or a stripped brake caliper. Here is why torque matters.

Too loose is dangerous

An under-torqued caliper or bracket bolt can work loose from vibration and heat, letting the caliper shift or fall - a serious safety failure. Brake fasteners see constant clamping loads and thermal cycling, so they must be at the correct tension to stay put.

Too tight causes damage

Over-torquing can strip threads in the knuckle, snap a bolt, or bind the guide pins so the caliper cannot slide - see caliper slide pins. A bound caliper drags and wears pads unevenly. The spec exists to hit the right middle.

Guide-pin vs bracket bolts

The two fasteners often have different specs: the lighter guide-pin (slider) bolts that hold the caliper to the bracket, and the heavier bracket bolts that hold the bracket to the knuckle. Look up both for your vehicle and use a torque wrench - see caliper service tools.

Do it right

Clean the threads, apply thread-locker only where specified, and torque to spec in the correct order. After a pad job, pump the pedal before driving - see seating new pads. Fit quality pads and hardware while you are in there.
