Towing a trailer or hauling a load changes what you need from a brake pad. The extra weight means more energy - and more heat - going through the brakes on every stop. The right pad handles that heat without fading. Here is what to look for.
Why towing is hard on brakes
Stopping a heavier combined load takes more braking force, and force becomes heat at the pad and rotor. When pads get too hot, some compounds lose bite - a condition called brake fade, where the pedal feels fine but the car does not slow like it should. On long grades with a trailer, fade is the enemy.
Semi-metallic pads resist fade
Semi-metallic pads are heavy on metal content, which moves heat away from the friction surface quickly and holds up under repeated hard stops. That fade resistance is exactly what a towing or hauling vehicle needs. The trade-off is a bit more noise and dust than a quiet ceramic - a fair deal for a working truck.
Heavy-duty ceramic is an option too
If you want lower noise and dust but still tow occasionally, look for a heavy-duty or severe-duty ceramic pad rated for higher temperatures. For frequent heavy towing, semi-metallic is usually the safer pick.
Do not forget the rest of the system
