The 2016-2020 Volvo XC90 has no parking brake cable or hand lever to adjust. It uses an electric parking brake: a small motor bolted to each rear caliper drives the piston against the pads, and the system sets its own clearance. When owners talk about "adjusting" it, what actually matters is putting the system into service mode before rear brake work and letting it re-learn afterward. The most common fault, the "Parking brake service required" message, is often wiring, not the caliper.
How the XC90 parking brake works
Volvo moved its North American lineup to electronic parking brakes years ago; every Volvo from 2015 on sold here has one, so every second-generation XC90 is equipped. On a caliper-integrated system like this, the actuator (motor and gear unit) is screwed directly to the rear caliper housing. The same caliper does two jobs: the foot brake pushes the piston hydraulically, and the parking brake motor drives it mechanically through a screw mechanism.
The switch in the center console sends a request to a control module, and the motors clamp the rear pads onto the rear rotors. Because the motor, not a cable, sets the clamp force, there is nothing to stretch and nothing to tighten. Systems of this type also add functions a lever cannot: automatic application, drive-away release, hill hold, and emergency braking where the rear wheels are applied in a controlled way to avoid locking the rear axle.
What this means for you as an owner:
- There is no periodic parking brake adjustment on this vehicle.
- Rear pad and rotor work requires electronic service mode first.
- Most parking brake complaints are electrical: wiring, actuator motors, or the control module.
"Parking brake service required": what Volvo says causes it
Volvo issued a Technical Journal to US and Canadian dealers, TJ 32525.5.2 (March 2023), titled after exactly this driver display message. It lists the XC90 among the affected models and directs technicians to inspect the parking brake wire harness at the rear axle for damage when the message appears together with stored trouble codes in the Brake Control Module (BCM). The codes it names include B111167, B111153, B111177, C200F29, C200674, C20071C, C20081B, C200713, C200E29, C200574 and C20071B.
Key points from that bulletin:
- The right-side repair instruction covers 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 XC90s and joins in a new wiring section from a service kit.
- On the left side there is no repair kit: if the left-hand axle harness is damaged, the complete harness is replaced.
- The bulletin also warns that these codes can be set for reasons other than damaged wiring, so the harness is a thing to check, not an automatic answer.
Symptoms that point to this family of faults:
- The "Parking brake service required" message in the instrument display, sometimes with a warning light and chime.
- The parking brake will not apply, will not release, or works on one side only.
- The brake releases slowly or makes a grinding motor noise at one rear wheel.
Diagnosing a parking brake problem the right way
Start with a scan tool that can read the Brake Control Module, not just engine codes. A generic code reader will usually show nothing. Record which codes are stored, and note whether they point to the left or right actuator circuit.
- Check battery health first. Parking brake motors draw real current; a weak 12-volt battery can make the system behave erratically or set faults.
- Inspect the rear harness. With the wheel off, follow the actuator wiring from the caliper along the axle. Look for chafed insulation, broken wires or a damaged connector, which is the failure Volvo's bulletin describes.
- Test the actuator. Shops most often see calipers that will not retract or actuator motors that stick. A seized caliper piston can mimic a failed motor, so check that the piston and slides move freely.
- Consider the module last. A failed parking brake control module is possible but rare compared with wiring and actuator faults.
If both actuators and the harness test good but faults return, the fix may be software. The dealer can check for updates to the brake modules.
Rear brake service: why service mode matters
This is where most do-it-yourself parking brake damage happens. On an electric parking brake caliper, the piston sits on a threaded spindle driven by the motor. You cannot push it back with a C-clamp or a spreader the way you would on an older rear caliper. Forcing it fights the screw mechanism and can ruin the actuator or the caliper.
Volvo's own dealer procedure uses its VIDA diagnostic software with bidirectional control, or its dedicated EPB tool, to command the rear actuators open. Several aftermarket scan tools offer the same Volvo function, usually labeled service mode or parking brake adaptation, with menu steps such as activate service mode, activate parking brake and installation check. The sequence is:
- Park on level ground, chock the front wheels, and make sure the parking brake is released.
- Use the scan tool to activate service mode. The motors wind the pistons back.
- Remove the caliper, replace the rear pads and, if needed, the rear rotors. Clean and lubricate the slide pins and pad contact points.
- Reinstall the caliper and tighten all fasteners to the values in the factory service manual.
- Exit service mode and run the installation check so the system re-establishes clearance with the new pads.
- Pump the brake pedal until it is firm, then apply and release the parking brake several times before driving.
Some owners describe button-and-ignition sequences that release the rear calipers without a scan tool. Those shortcuts vary by model and software level and are easy to get wrong. A scan tool with the Volvo function is the safer route, and it also reads the codes if something is not right.
Parts to replace together
Because the parking brake clamps the same pads and rotors as the foot brake, parking brake hold depends on their condition. A worn or glazed rear pad, or a rotor worn under its minimum thickness, reduces holding force on a hill.
| Situation | Replace | Also do |
|---|---|---|
| Rear pads worn | Rear pads, both sides | Measure rotors, clean and lubricate slides, service mode |
| Rear rotors scored or under minimum | Rear rotors and pads as a set | Inspect harness routing while the wheel is off |
| "Parking brake service required" with harness damage | Harness section (right) or complete harness (left) | Clear codes, confirm apply and release both sides |
| Actuator motor stuck or noisy | Actuator or caliper assembly | Bleed brakes if the caliper is opened |
For rear rotor replacement on the 320 mm rear setup, we carry the DBA Street Series slotted rear rotor for the 2016-2020 XC90. Always confirm your rear rotor size before ordering; the XC90 was built with more than one rear brake size. If you are doing the front axle at the same time, the EBC Yellowstuff front brake pads for 2016-2017 XC90 suit owners who tow or drive hard. Browse all options in our brake pads collection and brake rotors collection, or pick up a brake hardware kit for fresh clips and slides.
How hard is the job?
Rear pads and rotors on an XC90 are a moderate job for a home mechanic who owns a scan tool with the Volvo service function. The mechanical work is conventional. The difficulty is entirely in the electronics: entering and exiting service mode correctly. Without that tool, leave rear brake work to a shop.
Harness repair is harder. The right-side fix involves cutting out and splicing in a new section, and the left side calls for a complete harness. Actuator and module diagnosis needs the codes. For most owners, harness and module work belongs with a dealer or a Volvo specialist.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I adjust the parking brake on a 2016-2020 XC90?
No manual adjustment exists. The electric motors set the clamp force and clearance automatically. If holding power seems weak, check rear pad and rotor condition and scan the Brake Control Module for faults.
Can I push the rear caliper piston back with a C-clamp?
No. The piston rides on a motor-driven screw. Use a scan tool to put the parking brake in service mode first, or you risk damaging the actuator and caliper.
What does "Parking brake service required" mean?
The system has detected a fault in the parking brake circuit. Volvo's dealer bulletin for this message tells technicians to inspect the rear parking brake wiring harness for damage, while noting the same codes can have other causes.
Is it safe to drive with the parking brake warning on?
The foot brake is hydraulic and separate, but the parking brake may not hold or may not release. Do not rely on it to hold the vehicle on a slope, and have it diagnosed promptly.
Are there recalls affecting XC90 braking?
NHTSA recall 25V392 covers certain 2020-2026 Volvo models, including some XC90s, and traces a braking concern to a specific Brake Control Module software version. It is a software remedy, not a parking brake part. Enter your VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup to see whether your vehicle is included.
Do I need new calipers when I replace rear pads?
Not normally. Replace calipers only if the piston or actuator is seized, leaking or failing to retract.
