Most caliper trouble on a 2016-2022 Volvo XC60 shows up as a pull to one side, one wheel running hot, or uneven pad wear, and the usual causes are dry or seized slide pins, a sticking piston, or, at the rear, the electronic parking brake (EPB) motor that is built onto the caliper. The key thing to know before you touch the rear brakes is that this generation range straddles two platforms, and on both the rear piston must be retracted the correct way or you can ruin the EPB actuator.

Two Generations, Two Rear Caliper Designs

The 2016 and 2017 XC60 are the last years of the first generation, built on Volvo's P3 platform alongside the S60, V60, S80 and V70. The 2018 and newer XC60 is the second generation (internal code 246) on the SPA platform. Both use four-wheel disc brakes, and both put the parking brake at the rear calipers rather than in a separate drum or cable system.

Because the rear parking brake works through the caliper, a rear caliper problem on an XC60 can be hydraulic, mechanical (pins and bracket), or electrical (the EPB motor). Diagnose which one before buying parts.

Symptoms of a Bad Caliper on the XC60

  • Pulling under braking. One caliper clamping harder than the other gives uneven braking force and the SUV drifts toward the stronger side.
  • Dragging and heat. A caliper that does not release keeps the pads on the rotor. After a drive, that wheel is noticeably hotter than the others and you may smell hot brakes.
  • Uneven pad wear. If the inner pad is far thinner than the outer on the same wheel, the slide pins or piston are binding.
  • Fluid on the inside of the wheel. A leaking piston seal or damaged caliper body leaves wet brake fluid on the tire sidewall or caliper.
  • Soft or sinking pedal. Air or a leaking seal lowers hydraulic pressure and the pedal goes down further than normal.
  • Parking brake warnings (rear only). A parking brake fault message, one rear wheel that will not hold or will not release, or a motor that runs without applying points to the EPB side of the rear caliper.

What Causes XC60 Caliper Problems

Slide pins

Both front and rear calipers float on guide pins inside rubber boots. When a boot tears, water gets in, the grease washes out, and the pin corrodes. The caliper can no longer center itself, so one pad does most of the work. This is the most common and cheapest failure to fix: pull the pins, clean them, regrease them and replace torn boots.

Corrosion and old fluid

Rust on the bracket abutments pinches the pad ears, and moisture absorbed by aging brake fluid corrodes the piston bore from the inside. Either one makes the piston or pads stick. Brake fluid absorbs water over time, so follow the fluid change interval in your owner's manual and use the fluid grade Volvo lists there.

Forced rear pistons

On the 2018 and newer SPA XC60, the rear piston is held by the EPB motor and its gear train. Pressing it back with a clamp while the motor is still in the applied position can strip the gears and burn out the actuator, and the fix is a new caliper and motor assembly. Many "bad rear caliper" XC60s are the result of a previous pad job done without service mode.

EPB motor or wiring

The motor bolts to the back of the caliper and lives in road spray. A corroded connector or a failed motor will set a parking brake fault even when the hydraulic side of the caliper is fine. A weak 12-volt battery can also stop the service routine from running, so check battery condition before condemning a motor.

Check for Recalls First

Before replacing parts to chase an ABS or stability control warning, run your VIN on the NHTSA recall lookup. Recall 25V392 covers certain 2020-2026 Volvo models, including the XC60, fitted with a specific Brake Control Module (BCM2) software version; the filing states a diagnostic error in that software can cause loss of ABS, stability control and traction control. That is a software remedy done by the dealer or over the air, not a caliper, so rule it out before spending money on hardware.

Replacing an XC60 Caliper: The Fix and What Goes With It

Front calipers

The fronts are a conventional bolt-on job: support the vehicle, remove the wheel, disconnect the brake hose at the caliper, remove the caliper, then install the new or remanufactured unit and bleed the system. Shop replacement brake calipers by position, because front and rear, left and right are different parts.

Rear calipers on the 2016-2017 (P3)

Release the parking brake electronically with a scan tool's "Replace Brake Pads" function, or follow the manual retraction procedure Volvo packs with its pads. For the P3 cars, FCP Euro's service guide lists the caliper guide bolts at 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs), the bracket bolts at 110 Nm (81 ft-lbs) and the rotor retaining screw at 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs); confirm against the factory service information for your VIN before you torque anything.

Rear calipers on the 2018-2022 (SPA)

With the car in Park on level ground, ignition on and the parking brake released, enter EPB service mode from the center display (under the service and repair or brake maintenance settings, depending on software version). Both rear motors retract together. Do the work, then exit service mode so the motors re-tension against the new pads before you drive. Torque all fasteners to the factory service manual values.

Replace together

  • Pads on both sides of the axle. A seized caliper usually glazes or overheats its pads. The Bosch front ceramic brake pads for the 2016-2022 XC60 are a direct-fit option; browse all brake pads for the rear.
  • Rotors if they are heat-spotted, scored or under minimum thickness. A dragging caliper often leaves a blued or warped rotor. See brake rotors.
  • Hardware. New abutment clips and a fresh coat of the correct brake grease on the pins. A brake hardware kit is inexpensive insurance.
  • Brake fluid. Any time the hydraulic system is opened, bleed with fresh fluid of the grade Volvo specifies.

How Hard Is the Job?

A front caliper is a moderate DIY job for someone who has bled brakes before. A rear caliper on either generation adds the EPB step, which is simple if you follow the correct procedure and expensive if you do not. Budget time for bleeding and a test drive, and always replace pads in axle pairs so braking stays even side to side. If the rear parking brake still shows a fault after a correct caliper replacement, the problem is electrical or software, and a scan tool that reads Volvo brake module codes is the next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I push the rear caliper piston back with a C-clamp on an XC60?

Not on the 2018 and newer SPA models while the EPB motor is applied. Put the car in EPB service mode first. On 2016-2017 models, use the scan tool function or Volvo's manual retraction procedure rather than forcing it.

Should I replace XC60 calipers in pairs?

Replacing only the failed caliper is acceptable if the other side is healthy, but pads should always be replaced on both sides of the axle. Many owners replace both calipers on high-mileage cars so the pistons and seals match.

Why does my XC60 pull to one side when braking?

A sticking caliper, seized slide pin, or collapsed brake hose on one side is the most common cause. Check which wheel runs hotter after a drive; the hot side is usually the one dragging.

Is a parking brake fault message a bad caliper?

Not always. It can be the EPB motor, a corroded connector, low battery voltage, or brake module software. Read the fault codes before replacing the caliper.

Do remanufactured calipers work on the XC60?

Yes, as long as the part matches the exact position and, for the rear, the correct EPB-equipped design for your model year. Order by year and generation, since the 2016-2017 and 2018-2022 rear calipers are different designs.
