A Toyota Tundra parking brake that will not hold, drags, or throws a warning light almost always traces back to one of two different systems, depending on the year. The 2015 to 2021 trucks use a foot pedal and cables that work a small drum brake hidden inside each rear rotor, and those shoes need periodic adjustment. The 2022 and newer trucks use an electric parking brake with a console switch, and their most common complaint is electronic, not mechanical, including a 2022 safety recall.
Two Different Parking Brakes: Know Which Tundra You Have
Before you diagnose anything, identify the system. Toyota's own quick reference guides show the difference clearly.
| Item | 2015-2021 Tundra (second generation) | 2022-2025 Tundra (third generation) |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Foot pedal on the driver side: depress to set, depress again to release | Electric parking brake switch on the center console: pull to set, press to release |
| How it holds | Cables pull a pair of shoes against a small drum machined into the hat of each rear rotor | An electrically driven EPB actuator, commanded by the brake control computer |
| Adjustment | Manual: shoe adjuster wheel plus cable adjuster | No routine manual adjustment |
| Automatic mode | None | Optional: sets automatically when you shift into P with your foot on the brake |
| Rear service brakes | Disc brakes with calipers | Disc brakes with calipers |
On the older trucks the rear calipers do the everyday stopping hydraulically, while the parking brake is a completely separate mechanical drum inside the rotor hat. That separation matters: new rear pads do nothing for a weak parking brake, and a fresh set of parking shoes does nothing for a pulsing pedal.
Symptoms and What They Usually Mean
2015-2021 (pedal and cable)
- Pedal goes almost to the floor and the truck still creeps on a hill. The shoes are worn or out of adjustment, or the cables have stretched. This is the most common Tundra parking brake complaint.
- Parking brake holds in one direction but not the other. Typical of shoes that have glazed or worn unevenly, or a drum surface that has rusted from sitting.
- Rear brakes feel hot or smell after a drive, with the pedal released. A seized cable, a stuck actuating lever at the backing plate, or shoes adjusted too tight so they drag on the drum.
- Grinding or scraping from the rear at low speed. A broken shoe return spring or a shoe lining that has come apart inside the drum.
- Brake warning light stays on with the pedal released. The pedal is not fully returning, or the pedal switch is out of position; check that before chasing hydraulic faults.
2022-2025 (electric parking brake)
- Parking brake indicator flashing. Toyota's guide states a flashing parking brake indicator means there may be a malfunction and directs you to the owner's manual.
- Switch pulled but the brake does not set. On 2022 trucks this matches the recall described below. Check whether the recall repair has been done.
- Brake sets or releases when you did not expect it. Usually automatic mode is on. With it active, shifting into P with the brake pedal depressed sets the brake, and shifting out of P with the brake pedal depressed releases it.
- Cannot release the brake. In manual mode the system requires the brake pedal to be depressed before the switch will release it. Also consider a weak 12-volt battery, since the actuator is electric.
How to Adjust the Parking Brake on a 2015-2021 Tundra
The factory procedure works in two stages: first set the shoe-to-drum clearance at each wheel, then take the slack out of the cables. Doing the cable first is the common mistake, because it hides worn or loose shoes and leaves the pedal feeling fine until the shoes wear a little more.
- Safety first. Chock the front wheels, raise the rear, support the truck on stands, and remove the rear wheels. Make sure the parking brake pedal is fully released.
- Adjust the shoes. With the rotor on, the shoe adjuster is reached through an access hole. The service procedure says to turn the adjustment wheel until the shoes lock, then back it off 8 notches, and confirm the rotor turns smoothly by hand. Repeat on the other side.
- Take up the cable slack. The service manual has you seat the cables first so any stretch is taken out, then adjust the cable nut at the pedal-side adjuster until pedal travel is in spec, and tighten the lock nut to the factory torque value.
- Check pedal travel. The specification is 6 to 9 clicks when the pedal is depressed with firm force. Fewer clicks can mean the shoes will drag; more clicks means the brake will not hold well.
- Verify. Apply and release the brake several times, recheck the click count, and spin both rotors to confirm they turn freely with the pedal released.
If the adjuster wheel is seized, the shoes are glazed or cracked, or the lining is thin, adjustment will not restore holding power. Pull the rotor and inspect the shoes, springs and the drum surface inside the hat.
Repairs: What Actually Fixes It
Parking brake shoes and hardware (2015-2021)
Because the parking brake on these trucks is only applied when parked, the shoes wear slowly, but they suffer from rust, contamination from a leaking axle seal, and damage from being driven with the brake partly applied. When you replace the shoes, replace the springs and hold-down hardware as a set; tired springs are a common reason a new set drags or rattles. Our brake hardware kits cover the springs and clips, and our brake shoes collection covers the linings.
Rotors, because the drum is part of the rotor
The parking brake drum is machined into the rotor hat. If the drum surface is scored, rusted deep, or worn oversize, the shoes cannot hold no matter how you adjust them, and the fix is a new rotor. If you are replacing rear brake rotors for pulsation anyway, it is the right time to install new parking shoes and hardware, since the job is already open. For rear pads on a 2015, the DBA XP650 rear brake pad set for the 2015 Tundra is built for heavier-duty use.
Cables
A cable that is frayed, kinked, or corroded inside its housing will not release fully and can cause dragging. Replace a seized cable rather than freeing it; the rust returns. Road salt states are hardest on the rear cable ends near the backing plates.
Electric parking brake (2022-2025)
Start with the recall check and the battery. After that, faults are diagnosed with a scan tool that reads the brake control computer's codes. The mechanical side still wears: the rear pads and rotors are ordinary disc brakes. Before rear brake work, release the electric parking brake and place it in its service state following the factory procedure, usually with a scan tool. Forcing parts apart with the parking brake system active can damage the actuator. For these trucks we carry Hawk LTS rear brake pads for the 2022-2023 Tundra and Hawk LTS front brake pads for the 2022-2025 Tundra.
The 2022 Tundra Electric Parking Brake Recall
In September 2022, NHTSA acknowledged Toyota recall 22V-661, covering certain 2022 Toyota Tundra trucks along with some 2022 Lexus NX models, 83,725 vehicles in total. According to the recall notice, the Skid Control ECU inside the brake actuator assembly may falsely detect an overcurrent condition in the electric parking brake actuator and enter a failsafe mode that prevents the parking brake from engaging. The listed consequence is that the vehicle could roll away. The remedy is a free reprogramming of the Skid Control ECU at a Toyota dealer. Toyota's campaign number for the Tundra is 22TA11.
If you own a 2022 Tundra with any parking brake complaint, run your VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup before paying for diagnosis. Until it is fixed, park on level ground where you can and use wheel chocks on any slope.
How Hard Is the Job?
On a 2015-2021 Tundra, a parking brake adjustment is a straightforward driveway job for anyone who has done rear brakes: jack stands, basic hand tools, a brake adjusting tool or flat screwdriver, and patience with the click count. Replacing the parking shoes is harder. The rotor must come off, the springs are strong, and it is easy to reassemble the hardware incorrectly. Take a photo of one side before you disassemble it and use it as the reference. The electric system on 2022 and newer trucks is less of a DIY job. Pads and rotors are still manageable at home, but only if you can put the parking brake into its service state properly, and electrical faults need a capable scan tool.
Whatever the year, the parking brake should hold the truck on its own. Relying on the transmission's parking pawl alone, especially on a slope with a loaded bed or a trailer attached, puts load on parts that are not meant to take it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many clicks should a Tundra parking brake pedal travel?
On 2015-2021 Tundras, the service specification is 6 to 9 clicks with firm pedal force. More than that means the shoes or cables need adjustment.
Does replacing rear brake pads fix a weak parking brake on a 2015-2021 Tundra?
No. On these trucks the parking brake uses separate shoes inside a drum in the rear rotor hat. Pads only affect the service brakes. A weak parking brake needs shoe adjustment, new shoes, a new rotor if the drum surface is worn, or cable work.
Why is my 2022 Tundra parking brake light flashing?
Toyota states that a flashing parking brake indicator means there may be a malfunction. Check whether recall 22V-661 has been performed, check the 12-volt battery, and have the system scanned for codes.
How do I turn off automatic parking brake mode on a 2022 or newer Tundra?
With the vehicle stopped, press and hold the parking brake switch until a buzzer sounds and the display shows that the EPB shift interlock function is deactivated. Pull and hold the switch the same way to turn it back on.
Should I replace parking brake shoes when I replace rear rotors?
On a 2015-2021 Tundra it is a smart time to do it if the shoes are worn, glazed or contaminated, because the rotor is already off and the shoes ride on the new drum surface. At minimum, inspect them and the springs.
Can I drive with the parking brake dragging?
You should not. A dragging parking brake overheats the rear rotor and shoes, can glaze the linings, and wears the drum. Find out whether a cable is sticking or the shoes are adjusted too tight.
