Every 2008-2014 Scion xD uses DOT 3 brake fluid. The owner's manual lists the fluid type as SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3. Scion's scheduled maintenance guide does not give a set mileage for replacing it. Instead it has you inspect the brake lines and hoses on a regular schedule, and the manual warns that fluid which has absorbed moisture brakes less effectively. So the practical answer is to test the fluid at every brake service and flush it when the test or its condition says so.
What the Factory Specifies for the Scion xD
The xD came in one generation for the US market, with a 1.8L four-cylinder, front ventilated disc brakes and rear drums. That layout shows up in the specifications, which give both a pad wear limit (front discs) and a lining wear limit (rear shoes). ABS, and on equipped cars traction control and VSC, work through the same hydraulic system and the same fluid.
| Item | Factory specification |
|---|---|
| Brake fluid type | SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 |
| Clutch fluid type (manual transmission) | SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 |
| Correct reservoir level | Between the MAX and MIN lines on the tank |
| Brake pedal free play | 0.04-0.24 in. (1-6 mm) |
| Front brake pad wear limit | 0.04 in. (1.0 mm) |
| Rear brake lining wear limit | 0.04 in. (1.0 mm) |
| Parking brake lever travel | 6-9 clicks |
Those values come from the specifications chapter of the xD owner's manual; the 2011 and later editions list the same fluid type, pedal free play and wear limits. If your car has a manual transmission, note that the hydraulic clutch uses the same DOT 3 spec, so one bottle covers both systems.
DOT 3 vs DOT 4 vs DOT 5: What You Can and Cannot Use
DOT grades are set by federal standard FMVSS No. 116. The key difference between them is how hot the fluid can get before it boils, both fresh (dry) and after it has picked up water (wet).
| Grade | Minimum dry boiling point | Minimum wet boiling point | Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOT 3 | 401 F (205 C) | 284 F (140 C) | Glycol ether, colorless to amber |
| DOT 4 | 446 F (230 C) | 311 F (155 C) | Glycol ether, colorless to amber |
| DOT 5 | 500 F (260 C) | 356 F (180 C) | Silicone, dyed purple |
- DOT 3 is what the xD was engineered for and what the manual calls for. Use it.
- DOT 4 is glycol-based like DOT 3 and meets a higher boiling standard. Many owners use it, but it is not what Scion lists, so check that the bottle states it also meets the DOT 3 requirement before topping off, and ideally flush fully rather than mixing.
- DOT 5 is silicone-based and must never go in an xD. It does not mix with glycol fluid, and an ABS/VSC system built for DOT 3 is not designed for it. The federal standard requires DOT 5 to be dyed purple so it is easy to spot.
How Often to Flush Brake Fluid on a Scion xD
The official xD scheduled maintenance guide has no brake fluid replacement line. What it does schedule is an inspection of the brake lines and hoses every 15,000 miles or 18 months, a visual check of the pads, discs, linings and drums at every 5,000-mile service, and a measurement of pad thickness and disc runout every 30,000 miles or 36 months. It also points owners to the manual for routine fluid checks.
The reason a flush still matters is that DOT 3 is hygroscopic: it pulls water out of the air through hose walls and seals over time. The owner's manual puts it bluntly, warning that excess moisture in the fluid can cause a dangerous loss of braking efficiency, and telling owners to use only newly opened fluid. As water content rises, the boiling point falls toward the wet figure in the table above, and water also promotes internal corrosion in the calipers, wheel cylinders and ABS actuator.
A sensible approach for an xD that is now well over a decade old:
- Test at every brake job. A boiling-point tester or copper test strip gives a real reading instead of a guess.
- Flush if you do not know when it was last done. On a used xD with no records, assume the fluid is original or close to it.
- Flush when the fluid is dark, cloudy, or has debris in the reservoir. Fresh DOT 3 is clear to light amber.
- Flush after any hydraulic repair such as a caliper, wheel cylinder, hose or master cylinder replacement, since the system has been opened anyway.
Symptoms That Point to Old or Low Fluid
- Brake warning light on. The xD brake system warning light comes on for low brake fluid or a brake system malfunction, as well as when the parking brake is applied. If it stays on with the parking brake fully released, stop and check the reservoir.
- Soft or sinking pedal, especially after repeated stops on a long downhill grade, which is the classic sign of moisture-laden fluid getting hot.
- Reservoir level dropping steadily. The manual notes that the level falls slightly as the pads wear, which is normal. If you need to add fluid often, there is a leak somewhere, and the manual calls that a potentially serious problem.
- Dark fluid in the translucent reservoir.
- Wet spots at a wheel, on the inside of a rear tire (a leaking wheel cylinder), or at the back of the master cylinder.
Before topping off a low reservoir, look at the front pads. A low level plus thin pads usually just means the caliper pistons have moved out as the pads wore. Replacing the pads will push the level back up, so do not overfill first.
How to Flush the Fluid on an xD
A flush is a normal DIY job on this car, with a few cautions.
- Remove the service cover. On the xD the reservoir sits under a small cover that clips off; the manual shows it being unclipped before the cap comes off.
- Remove old fluid from the reservoir with a clean syringe, then refill with fresh DOT 3 from a sealed bottle.
- Bleed each wheel with a clear hose into a catch bottle until clean fluid with no bubbles comes out. Keep the reservoir above MIN the whole time; letting it run dry can pull air into the master cylinder and ABS/VSC actuator, and clearing air from a VSC actuator typically needs a dealer-level scan tool.
- Tighten the bleeder screws to the value in the factory service manual. They are small and strip easily.
- Top off to between MAX and MIN, reinstall the cap and cover, and check pedal feel before driving.
Brake fluid damages paint and irritates skin and eyes, so cover the fender and flush any spill with water right away. Wear eye protection. Dispose of old fluid at a parts store or recycling center.
What to Replace at the Same Time
A flush is a natural time to catch the other parts that affect how an xD stops:
- Front pads and rotors. If pads are near the 1.0 mm limit or the rotors are grooved or pulsing, do them with the flush. We carry front drilled and slotted rotors for the 2008-2014 Scion xD, and you can pair them with low-dust ceramic brake pads.
- Rear shoes and hardware. The rear drums wear slowly but the springs and adjusters corrode. A brake hardware kit and fresh rear brake shoes restore proper self-adjustment.
- Rubber brake hoses. Cracked or swollen hoses are part of the factory inspection. Replace any that fail with new brake hoses, then bleed.
- Seized calipers. A caliper that drags or leaks should be replaced; see our brake calipers.

What brake fluid does a Scion xD take?
DOT 3, listed in the owner's manual as SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3. The same fluid is used for the hydraulic clutch on manual-transmission cars.
Can I put DOT 4 in my Scion xD?
DOT 4 is also glycol-based and has higher minimum boiling points, so it is chemically compatible, but the factory spec is DOT 3. If you switch, do a full flush rather than mixing, and never use silicone DOT 5.
Does Scion list a brake fluid change interval for the xD?
No. The xD scheduled maintenance guide has no brake fluid replacement item. It schedules inspections of brake lines, hoses, pads and discs, so the fluid should be judged by testing and condition.
Why is my xD brake fluid level low?
Some drop is normal as the front pads wear. If the reservoir needs frequent topping off, there is a leak at a caliper, wheel cylinder, hose, line or the master cylinder that needs repair.
Where is the brake fluid reservoir on a Scion xD?
It is in the engine compartment under a small clip-on service cover. Remove the cover to see the MAX and MIN lines and to reach the cap.
