The 2014-2022 MINI Cooper uses a DOT 4 low-viscosity (DOT 4 LV) brake fluid, the ISO 4925 Class 6 type that BMW and MINI specify for cars with ABS and Dynamic Stability Control. MINI does not print a fixed mileage for the flush: the car's Condition Based Service (CBS) system tracks brake fluid on time, and MINI's own service bulletins for the previous generation set that service at 24 months. If you do not know when it was last done, flush it now and then follow the CBS countdown.
What brake fluid the 2014-2022 MINI Cooper takes
This generation of Cooper (the F55 4 Door and F56 2 Door Hardtop and their siblings) has ABS and Dynamic Stability Control, which the owner's manual describes in its driving-stability section. Cars built around a stability-control pump are the reason BMW and MINI moved to low-viscosity DOT 4. At cold temperatures ordinary DOT 4 thickens a great deal, and a thick fluid slows the valves and return pump inside the ABS hydraulic unit. A low-viscosity fluid stays thin in the cold, so the unit reacts the way it was calibrated to.
What to look for on the bottle:
- DOT 4 LV, "low viscosity," or ISO 4925 Class 6 on the label. All three describe the same class of fluid.
- FMVSS 116 DOT 4 as the federal rating. A Class 6 fluid still meets DOT 4, so it is legal and correct for this car.
- A BMW/MINI reference number. Pentosin's DOT 4 LV data sheet, for example, lists BMW/MINI references 81 22 0 142 155, 81 22 0 142 156 and 81 22 0 146 735 among others.
Do not use DOT 5 (silicone). It is a different chemistry and does not mix with the glycol-based DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 fluids.
DOT 4 LV versus regular DOT 4: the numbers
Viscosity is the whole difference. The table below uses figures from the manufacturer data sheets and trade references listed at the end of this article.
| Property | Regular DOT 4 | DOT 4 LV (Class 6) |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum viscosity at -40 C | 1,800 mm2/s | 750 mm2/s (Pentosin DOT 4 LV rates 700 mm2/s or less) |
| Dry boiling point, example product | Varies by brand | 509 F or higher (Pentosin DOT 4 LV) |
| Wet boiling point, example products | Varies by brand | 338 F or higher (Pentosin DOT 4 LV); 347 F (ATE SL.6) |
| Mixes with other glycol fluids | Yes | Yes, but mixing dilutes the low-viscosity benefit |
For reference, the minimum DOT 3 rating is a 401 F dry and 284 F wet boiling point. "Wet" is measured with 3 percent water in the fluid, which is roughly where an old, neglected fill ends up. That is why time matters more than miles: brake fluid pulls moisture through hoses and the reservoir cap whether the car is driven or parked.
How often to flush it, and how the MINI tells you
MINI schedules brake fluid by time through CBS, not by an odometer number. When you switch the ignition on, the instrument cluster briefly shows the distance or time to the next scheduled service. For the detail, go to My MINI, Vehicle status, Service required on the center display; the maintenance items are listed there with a status symbol that changes as each comes due and turns to a warning once the interval is exceeded.
Two MINI service bulletins filed with NHTSA show how the interval is meant to run. SI M34 03 13 corrected earlier cars whose CBS showed the first brake fluid service at 36 months instead of the appropriate 24-month interval, and notes that after the reset, future services run on a 24-month interval. SI M01 10 14 likewise refers to the first brake fluid service at 24 months. Those bulletins cover the R-series cars that came before 2014, so on your F-series Cooper, trust what your own CBS display shows. Trade guidance also notes that some BMW-group extended-life fluids allow a three-year interval, which is one reason the CBS date can differ from car to car.
A few practical rules:
- Unknown history? Flush it. On a used Cooper with no records, the fluid could be well past due.
- Battery disconnected during storage? The owner's manual says storage periods with the battery disconnected are not counted, and asks that time-based items such as the brake fluid check be updated by a service center. A car that sat for a winter with the battery off may be later than the display says.
- Complimentary maintenance. MINI lists brake fluid service as included in Complimentary Scheduled MINI Maintenance for model year 2019 and newer cars, for 3 years or 36,000 miles, for the original owner. If your car qualifies, have the dealer do it and keep the record.
Signs the fluid is overdue
- A softer or longer pedal, especially after hard stops or a long downhill run, when heat has boiled the absorbed water.
- Dark fluid in the reservoir. Fresh DOT 4 LV is amber and clear.
- The CBS brake fluid item showing as due or overdue.
- A brake system warning in the cluster. The manual says to continue driving moderately and have the car checked immediately.
Color alone is not a moisture test. A shop can check water content or boiling point with a tester, but on this car the calendar is the simpler rule.
How the flush is done on a MINI
A flush replaces all of the fluid, not just the reservoir. Low-viscosity fluid only does its job if the old, thicker fluid is pushed out of the lines, calipers and ABS unit. Trade guidance is direct on this: because of the viscosity difference, the old fluid has to be removed from the master cylinder all the way to the calipers.
- Use sealed, fresh DOT 4 LV. Open bottles absorb moisture on the shelf.
- Remove as much old fluid from the reservoir as you can and refill with new.
- Bleed each caliper in the order given in the factory service information until clean fluid runs out with no bubbles. A pressure bleeder at the reservoir makes this a one-person job.
- If the ABS unit was ever run dry or opened, it may need to be bled with a scan tool that cycles the pump and valves. A routine flush where the reservoir never runs empty normally does not need it.
- Top up to the MAX mark, check for leaks at every bleeder, and road test at low speed before normal driving.
- Have the CBS brake fluid item reset so the next due date is correct.
For a home mechanic with a pressure bleeder this is a straightforward job. The most common mistakes are letting the reservoir run low mid-bleed, which pulls air toward the ABS unit, and topping up with regular DOT 4 from a parts-counter bottle.
What to check at the same time
A fluid flush is a good time to look at the rest of the system, because the wheels are off and the calipers are exposed:
- Pads and rotors. Measure pad thickness and check rotors for a lip and scoring. We carry 2014-2022 MINI Cooper rear ceramic brake pads, and you can browse ceramic brake pads and brake rotors for the front axle. New pads and rotors need about 300 miles (500 km) to reach full effectiveness, per the owner's manual, so drive gently at first.
- Caliper slides and bleeders. A seized bleeder screw is easier to deal with now than in the middle of a pad job. If a caliper is sticking, see our brake calipers.
- Hoses. Check rubber hoses for cracks or bulging; replacements are in brake hoses.
- Hardware. The clips and pins in a brake hardware kit keep pads from rattling and wearing unevenly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use regular DOT 4 in my MINI Cooper?
It mixes with DOT 4 LV and will not attack the seals, but it is much thicker in cold weather and does not match what the ABS and stability-control unit was designed around. Use a fluid labeled DOT 4 LV, low viscosity, or ISO 4925 Class 6.
Is DOT 5.1 OK instead?
DOT 5.1 is glycol based and compatible, and low-viscosity 5.1 versions exist. The simplest correct choice is still DOT 4 LV with a BMW/MINI reference on its data sheet. Never use DOT 5 silicone fluid.
How often should the brake fluid be changed on a 2014-2022 Cooper?
Follow the CBS brake fluid date on the car. MINI's bulletins for earlier Coopers set the service at 24 months, and if you do not know the history, flush it now and restart the clock.
Does mileage matter for brake fluid?
Not much. Fluid absorbs moisture over time whether the car is driven or parked, which is why MINI schedules it by time. A low-mileage garage car still needs it.
Do I need a scan tool to flush the brakes?
Not for a routine flush where the reservoir never runs dry. If air got into the ABS unit, a scan tool that can cycle the ABS pump and valves is needed to bleed it properly, and a scan tool is also the usual way to reset the CBS brake fluid item.
Is brake fluid covered under MINI's free maintenance?
For model year 2019 and newer cars sold by a MINI dealer, MINI lists brake fluid service as included for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, for the original owner only.
