The most common caliper problem on the 2016-2023 Mazda CX-9 is a rear caliper that drags, and on early 2016 trucks Mazda confirmed it in a service bulletin: the electric parking brake built into the rear caliper may not release fully, causing noise and fast outer-pad wear. A sticking front or rear caliper shows up as a pull, a hot wheel, a burning smell, or one pad worn far thinner than its partner. The fix is to replace the faulty caliper, and usually the pads and rotor on that axle with it.
How the Brakes Work on the Second-Generation CX-9
The 2016-2023 CX-9 uses disc brakes at all four corners. Up front, a hydraulic caliper squeezes the pads when you press the pedal. At the rear, the caliper does double duty: it is the normal hydraulic service brake, and it is also the parking brake. Mazda's owner's manual describes the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) as a system that applies the parking brake with an electric motor, controlled by a switch on the console. That motor is bolted to the back of each rear caliper and drives the piston mechanically when you set the brake.
That design matters when you diagnose or replace a rear caliper. There is no parking brake cable to adjust and no separate drum-in-hat shoe. If the motor-driven mechanism inside a rear caliper does not fully back off after the EPB releases, the pads stay loaded against the rotor while you drive.
The EPB also releases itself automatically when you press the accelerator, but only when the engine is running, the driver's door is closed, the seat belt is buckled, and the transmission is in D, M or R. Knowing this helps separate a real caliper fault from a release that simply did not trigger.
The Known Issue: Rear Caliper Drag from the Electric Parking Brake
Mazda Technical Service Bulletin 04-005/17, "Noise From Rear Brakes Due to Brake Dragging," covers 2016 CX-9 vehicles with VINs lower than JM3TC******120519, which Mazda lists as produced before September 15, 2016. The bulletin says some vehicles may show rear brake dragging, brake noise and abnormal outer brake pad wear, and may roll momentarily to one side when pulling away from a stop with the EPB applied. Mazda attributes it to the EPB not releasing completely and states that the calipers were modified to correct it.
Two details from the bulletin are worth knowing if you own an early truck or are shopping for a used one:
- The part number did not change. Mazda notes that modified calipers are identified by a 3-digit lot number (production date) stamped on the caliper, and that lot number 697 (September 7, 2016) and higher are the modified parts.
- It is a caliper replacement, not an adjustment. The repair replaces the affected side's rear caliper, with new gaskets and a motor seal kit, and replaces the pads and disc plate on that side if they are damaged.
A TSB is not a recall. It tells dealers how to fix a known concern when an owner reports it. If your early 2016 CX-9 has the symptoms, a Mazda dealer can tell you whether the bulletin applies to your VIN and whether any coverage remains. Later trucks were built after the change, but any caliper on any year can still stick from age, corrosion or contaminated fluid.
Symptoms of a Bad Caliper on a CX-9
| Symptom | What it usually points to |
|---|---|
| Rolls to one side for a moment when pulling away with the EPB set | One rear caliper releasing late (the TSB 04-005/17 check) |
| Grinding or dragging noise from the rear at low speed | Rear pads not fully released from the rotor |
| Outer rear pad much thinner than the inner pad | EPB mechanism not backing off, as noted in the Mazda bulletin |
| Pads discolored or whitened by heat, one wheel hotter than the rest | A caliper holding pressure on that corner |
| Pull to one side while braking, or drift while coasting | Seized piston or stuck slide pins on one side |
| Fluid on the inside of a wheel, soft pedal | Leaking piston seal or bleeder; replace the caliper |
Do not confuse a caliper fault with normal pad wear. Mazda's manual explains that the CX-9's disc pads have built-in wear indicators that contact the rotor and make a screeching noise when the pads are worn. That sound means pads are due, not that a caliper has failed. The manual also notes that some squeak in humid weather is not a malfunction.
How to Diagnose Which Caliper Is Sticking
Mazda's bulletin lays out a simple sequence that works for any rear caliper drag complaint on this truck:
- Roll test. On level ground, with the door shut and belt fastened, set the EPB, then pull away slowly while holding the wheel lightly. If the truck rolls briefly to one side, the rear caliper on that side is releasing late.
- Listen. Drive slowly and listen for a dragging noise from one rear corner.
- Spin test. With the rear wheels off, apply and then release the EPB, and check that each rear rotor turns easily by hand. One that is hard to turn points to that caliper.
- Read the pads and rotor. Look for heat-whitened pads, uneven wear with only the outer pad worn, or a heat-discolored rotor.
For the fronts, jack up the corner, spin the wheel, and compare it with the other side. Check that the caliper slides freely on its pins, that the piston boot is not torn, and that the flexible hose is not swollen. Also check fluid: Mazda's manual says the level normally drops as the linings wear, but a level that is excessively low can mean pad wear or a leak and should be inspected. Top up only with the fluid grade printed on the reservoir cap.
Replacing a CX-9 Caliper: What Is Involved
Front calipers are a conventional job: support the truck, remove the wheel, clamp the brake hose, unbolt the caliper, move the hose connection to the new unit with new sealing washers, install, and bleed that circuit. Buy them in pairs so both sides apply evenly. Browse replacement brake calipers by fitment.
Rear calipers need more care because of the EPB motor. Trade training from Brake and Front End is blunt about electronic parking brakes: a brake job on an EPB vehicle needs a scan tool with the right software to retract the caliper pistons, and shortcuts such as forcing the piston or jumping the motor connector can set fault codes or damage the unit. Use the scan tool's EPB service function (or the factory procedure) to put the rear calipers in service position before you touch the pistons, then run the function again to re-seat the pads when you are done. Mazda's bulletin also calls for a new gasket and motor seal kit when the EPB motor is moved to a new caliper, so check whether your replacement caliper comes with its motor or reuses yours.
For reference, Mazda's warranty labor time for the bulletin repair is about an hour for one rear caliper, so this is a moderate job for someone with the right tools. It is not a good first brake job if you do not have an EPB-capable scan tool. Torque every caliper and bracket bolt to the value in the factory service manual, and bleed the system with fresh fluid afterward.
What to Replace at the Same Time
- Pads on both sides of the axle. A dragging caliper usually glazes or overheats its pads. Replace the full axle set so braking stays even. See ceramic brake pads for a quiet, low-dust option.
- Rotors if heat-damaged. Blue spots, heavy scoring or a rotor that fails runout or thickness checks should be replaced. Browse brake rotors.
- Hardware and slide pins. New clips and freshly lubricated pins are cheap insurance. Get a brake hardware kit.
- Brake hoses if they are swollen or cracked, since a collapsed hose can hold pressure on a caliper. See brake hoses.
- Fresh brake fluid after any caliper swap, since you are opening the system anyway.
If the front pads and rotors are due at the same time, a complete kit saves a second teardown. Our 2016-2023 Mazda CX-9 front brake kit covers that job.

Is there a recall for Mazda CX-9 brake calipers?
We did not find a brake caliper recall for the 2016-2023 CX-9 in NHTSA's recall listings. The known issue is covered by Mazda Technical Service Bulletin 04-005/17, which addresses rear brake drag from the electric parking brake on early 2016 CX-9 models. A bulletin is a repair guide for dealers, not a recall.
How do I know if my 2016 CX-9 has the updated rear calipers?
Mazda says the part number did not change. The modified calipers carry a stamped 3-digit lot number, and lot 697 and higher are the updated version. Your VIN also tells a dealer whether the bulletin applies.
Can I push the rear caliper piston back with a C-clamp on a CX-9?
No. The rear calipers house the electric parking brake mechanism. Use a scan tool EPB service function or the factory procedure to retract the pistons. Forcing them can damage the motor-driven mechanism and set fault codes.
Should I replace calipers in pairs?
Yes, in most cases. Replacing both calipers on an axle keeps clamping force and piston response even side to side, which avoids a pull. At minimum, replace the pads on both sides.
Why is only my outer rear brake pad worn out?
On this truck, uneven outer-pad wear at the rear is one of the signs Mazda lists for an electric parking brake that is not releasing completely. Have the caliper on that side checked before you fit new pads, or the new ones will wear the same way.
Can I drive with a sticking caliper?
It is not a good idea. A dragging caliper overheats the pads and rotor, wastes fuel, and can fade the brakes on that corner. Mazda's manual also warns against driving with the parking brake applied because the brake parts generate heat.
