2014-2016 Maserati Ghibli ABS Light On: Common Causes and Fixes

ABS warning light causes on a 2014-2016 Maserati Ghibli

An ABS light that stays on in a 2014-2016 Maserati Ghibli means the car has switched off its anti-lock function after finding a fault, most often a wheel speed sensor signal, a wiring or connector problem at a wheel, low brake fluid, or a fault inside the ABS hydraulic unit. Your normal brakes still work, but the wheels can lock in a hard stop, so scan the car for codes and fix the cause before you lean on it in bad weather. If the red brake light is on together with the ABS light, treat it as urgent.

How the ABS Works on the Ghibli

The 2014-2016 Ghibli (the M157 generation) uses four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), traction control and Brake Assist, all run through one ABS/ESC control unit. Each wheel has a speed sensor. Bosch describes these as active sensors that read wheel speed without contact, and the control unit compares all four. When one wheel starts to slow faster than the car, the hydraulic unit drops pressure to that wheel, then builds it back up, many times per second, so the tire keeps rolling and the car stays steerable.

Maserati's owner's manual lists a few things that are normal and are not faults:

  • At key-on the ABS light comes on and may stay lit for about 4 seconds as a system check.
  • Once the car passes about 7 mph after every start, you may hear a brief clicking or motor noise. That is the ABS running its self-check.
  • During a real ABS stop you may feel pedal pulsation, hear the pump motor and valve clicks, and feel the pedal drop slightly at the end of the stop.

What is not normal is the ABS light staying on after startup, coming on while driving, or never lighting at all at key-on. The manual states that in those cases the anti-lock part of the system is not working and needs service.

Which Warning Lights Are On, and What Each Combination Means

The Ghibli has three brake-related lights that often show up together, and the combination tells you a lot before you even plug in a scanner.

Lights on What the system is telling you How urgent
ABS light only Anti-lock function disabled; base brakes still work Fix soon; avoid hard stops on slick roads
ABS light plus ESC light Usually one fault (commonly a wheel speed signal) shutting down both systems, since ESC relies on the same sensors Fix soon
Red brake light plus ABS light Maserati says this indicates an EBD failure, meaning rear brake balance control is lost Immediate repair; drive gently to the shop
Red brake light only Parking brake on, pads at wear limit, low brake fluid, or a hydraulic or booster fault Check fluid and pads right away

The manual also notes that if the ESC light stays on, the car should be driven through several ignition cycles and several miles above 30 mph before you conclude the fault is still present. If it is still lit after that, the fault is real and needs diagnosis.

Common Causes of an ABS Light on a 2014-2016 Ghibli

1. Wheel speed sensor or its signal

This is the most common single cause on almost any ABS car. A sensor can fail outright, but just as often the signal is corrupted: a cracked connector, a chafed harness near the suspension, corrosion in the plug, or debris on the sensor tip. The scan tool will usually name the wheel. Compare live wheel speed data from all four sensors while rolling; the one that drops out or reads erratically is your suspect.

2. Wheel bearing trouble

The speed sensor reads a toothed or magnetic ring that turns with the hub, so a worn or loose bearing can move that ring away from the sensor and throw an intermittent code. This matters on the Ghibli because NHTSA recall 16V649000 covers certain 2015 Ghibli cars built March 11 through May 14, 2015, whose front wheel bearings may have insufficient hardness and fail early. If your 2015 falls in that window, have a Maserati dealer confirm the recall was done before you buy a sensor. A growling noise that changes with speed or in turns points the same way.

3. Low brake fluid

The red brake light is the one tied to fluid level, but a hydraulic problem can also bring up ABS and stability warnings. The manual points out that normal pad wear slowly lowers the reservoir level. A sudden drop, though, means a leak. Maserati specifies a synthetic DOT 4 fluid for this car and warns that mineral or petroleum-based fluid will damage the brake seals, so top up only with the correct fluid and look for the leak.

4. Brake booster or hydraulic fault

According to Maserati, if the red brake light stays on with the parking brake off and the fluid full, the ABS/ESC system may have found a hydraulic fault or a brake booster problem. With a booster fault, the ABS unit runs to help when you press the pedal, so you may feel pedal pulsation during every stop, not just panic stops. That symptom is a strong clue.

5. ABS control unit or pump

Internal faults in the ABS module or pump motor are less common than sensor issues, but they happen. Signs include a code pointing at the module itself, a pump motor or valve fault, or several unrelated wheel codes at once. Rule out power, ground, fuses and low battery voltage first; weak voltage can set a string of false ABS and stability faults on any modern car.

6. Radio or electronics interference

This one is specific. Maserati warns that the ABS electronics can be affected by improperly installed or high-output radio transmitting equipment, which can cause loss of anti-lock function. If the light appeared right after an aftermarket install, check that first.

How to Diagnose It, Step by Step

  1. Note which lights are on using the table above. Red brake plus ABS goes to the front of the line.
  2. Check the brake fluid at the master cylinder reservoir. If it is low, look for wet spots at each wheel, the calipers, hoses and lines before topping up.
  3. Look at the pads. The Ghibli's brake light comes on when the pads reach their wear limit. Bosch explains that electronic pad wear sensors work as a circuit that breaks as the pad wears down. Worn pads also lower the fluid level.
  4. Read the codes with a scan tool that can talk to the ABS/ESC module, not just the engine computer. A basic engine code reader often cannot see ABS faults.
  5. Check live wheel speed data on a short drive to confirm which sensor is dropping out.
  6. Inspect the sensor, connector and harness at the named wheel for damage, corrosion and chafing. Clean the sensor tip and mounting surface.
  7. Check the hub bearing at that wheel for play or noise, and look up open recalls by VIN on nhtsa.gov.
  8. Clear the codes and road test. Remember the ESC light may need several drive cycles above 30 mph to go out.

The Fix, and What to Replace at the Same Time

Match the repair to the confirmed cause. A failed sensor gets a new sensor, a bad connector gets repaired, and a worn bearing gets a hub or bearing replacement, which often cures the ABS code at the same time. Module and pump faults are dealer or specialist territory on this car because a replacement unit typically has to be set up to the vehicle with factory-level software.

A lot of ABS lights appear right after brake work, because a sensor wire was stretched or a connector was left loose while the caliper was off. The reverse is also true: if you are into the brakes anyway, this is the time to do pads properly and check everything nearby. For the 2014-2016 Ghibli we carry:

Front pad fitment on the Ghibli depends on the brake package on your car, so compare the pad shape to your caliper before ordering. When you replace pads, also replace the pad wear sensor if yours is worn through, since a used sensor will keep the brake light on. Check the rotors for thickness and heat damage, and flush the brake fluid if it is dark or old. You can browse brake rotors, brake hardware kits and brake lines for the rest of the job.

How Hard Is This Job?

Reading codes and checking fluid and pads is easy for any owner with a capable scan tool. Replacing a wheel speed sensor or repairing a connector is a moderate DIY job: lift the car, remove the wheel, unplug and unbolt the sensor, and route the new harness exactly like the old one, clear of the suspension. Pad replacement is also moderate, with the added step of the wear sensor. Bearing and hub work, brake bleeding with ABS in the circuit, and anything involving the ABS module are better left to a shop with Maserati-capable diagnostic software, since the hydraulic unit may need to be cycled during bleeding. Torque all fasteners to the values in the factory service manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to drive a Ghibli with the ABS light on?

Maserati states the conventional brakes keep working when only the ABS light is on, so you can drive carefully to get it fixed. You lose anti-lock and likely stability control, so leave more distance and avoid hard braking on wet or icy roads. If the red brake light is also on, get it repaired immediately.

Why are the ABS and ESC lights on at the same time?

Stability control uses the same wheel speed sensors as the ABS. When one sensor signal fails, the car usually shuts off both systems and lights both warnings. One repair usually fixes both.

Will new brake pads turn off the ABS light?

Not directly. Worn pads trigger the red brake light, not the ABS light. However, pad jobs can disturb sensor wiring, and repairing a damaged wire or connector during the job can clear an ABS fault.

Can low brake fluid cause warning lights on a Ghibli?

Low fluid turns on the red brake light, and a hydraulic fault can bring ABS and stability warnings with it. Top up with the synthetic DOT 4 fluid Maserati specifies and find the leak, or confirm the drop is just from pad wear.

Does the 2014-2016 Ghibli have an ABS recall?

NHTSA lists no ABS recall for these years, but recall 16V649000 covers front wheel bearings on certain 2015 Ghibli cars, and bearing trouble can affect wheel speed readings. Recall 16V264000 covers rear tie-rod to hub carrier bolts on 2014-2016 cars. Check your VIN.

Why did the ESC light stay on after the repair?

Maserati notes the ESC light can stay on until the car completes several ignition cycles and several miles above 30 mph. If it stays on after that, there is still an active fault.
