2013-2020 Lexus GS350 ABS Light On: Common Causes and Fixes

ABS warning light causes on a 2013-2020 Lexus GS350

By Core Brake Parts Tech Team — Circleville, OH warehouse

An ABS light on a 2013-2020 Lexus GS350 means the skid control computer has found a fault in the anti-lock brake system or the brake assist system and has switched those functions off. Your normal brakes still work, but the wheels can lock in a hard stop. The most common causes are a failed or dirty wheel speed sensor, a damaged sensor wire or connector, or a worn wheel bearing that throws off the sensor signal, and the first step is always to read the stored C-codes with a scan tool that can talk to the ABS module.

How the ABS System Works on the GS350

Every 2013-2020 GS350 has four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, brake assist, TRAC traction control and VSC stability control. The Lexus owner's manual also lists Enhanced VSC, which coordinates the ABS, TRAC, VSC and electric power steering. All of these systems share the same inputs: a wheel speed sensor at each corner that reads a toothed or magnetic encoder ring turning with the hub. The ABS module compares the four speeds continuously. When one wheel slows much faster than the others under braking, the module pulses the brake pressure to that wheel so it keeps turning.

Because ABS, TRAC and VSC all depend on those four signals, one bad sensor usually lights more than one lamp. It is normal to see the ABS light together with the slip indicator (the VSC/TRAC light) and a message on the multi-information display.

The hydraulic side is conventional: the manual describes a brake system of two individual hydraulic circuits, filled with FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 or SAE J1703 brake fluid. The rear discs also carry a small drum-in-disc parking brake, applied by an electric switch.

What Each Warning Light Is Telling You

The GS350 has separate lights for the ABS and for the base brake system, and the combination matters.

What you see What the owner's manual says it means How urgent
ABS light only Malfunction in the ABS or the brake assist system Normal brakes work; ABS and panic-stop assist may not. Get it scanned soon.
Slip indicator on steady Malfunction in VSC, TRAC or hill-start assist control Often lights with the ABS light from the same wheel speed fault
Red brake system light with buzzer Low brake fluid or a brake booster system malfunction Stop in a safe place. Check fluid before driving further.
ABS and brake system lights both on The manual warns the car can become extremely unstable during braking and the ABS may fail Stop immediately and have the car towed or inspected
Brake light or parking brake indicator flashing Malfunction in the parking brake system Separate from ABS; check the electric parking brake

If a light comes on and then goes out, Lexus notes that does not always mean a fault, but if it keeps happening the system should be inspected. Intermittent lights are usually a sensor, connector or bearing problem that only shows up over bumps, in turns or in wet weather.

Common Causes of an ABS Light on a GS350

1. Wheel speed sensor failure

The sensor itself is the most frequent single part to fail. Internal wiring breaks, the sensor tip cracks, or water gets into the body. The scan tool will usually point to one corner with a code for an open circuit, short, or implausible signal.

2. Debris on the sensor tip or encoder

Wheel speed sensors are magnetic, and Brake and Front End notes they can collect metallic debris from brake linings and rotors. A layer of iron dust on the tip or encoder weakens the signal until the module decides the sensor is bad. This is common after a brake job where the hub area was not cleaned.

3. Damaged wiring or connectors

The sensor harness runs along the suspension and flexes every time the wheel moves or turns. Corroded connectors and chafed or broken wires are a leading cause of ABS codes. The trade technique is to check the circuit with a meter while wiggling the harness: if the reading suddenly opens or jumps, you have found the break.

4. Worn wheel bearing

On modern hubs the encoder is part of the bearing assembly. Tomorrow's Technician explains that when a bearing develops play, the air gap between the sensor and encoder changes, and the module sees impossible speed changes, especially in turns. If the ABS light comes and goes with a hum or growl from one wheel, suspect the bearing, not the sensor. Replacing the sensor on a loose bearing will not fix it.

5. Mismatched tires

The owner's manual states that the ABS, TRAC and VSC systems will not function correctly if different tires are installed. Tires of different sizes or very different tread depth make the wheels turn at different speeds and can set a code, particularly on AWD cars.

6. Low brake fluid or a hydraulic fault

Low fluid triggers the red brake light, and a fault in the hydraulic unit can light the ABS lamp as well. On the GS350, low fluid is most often simply worn pads: as pads wear, the caliper pistons move out and the reservoir level drops. Top up with DOT 3 only after checking pad thickness, and look for leaks at hoses and calipers if the level keeps falling.

How to Diagnose It Step by Step

  1. Read the codes. A basic engine code reader will not see ABS faults. You need a scan tool that reads the ABS/VSC module. Write down every C-code and which wheel it names.
  2. Check the brake fluid and pads. If the red brake light is also on, check that the fluid level is between MAX and MIN and inspect pad thickness. Squealing or scraping from the wheels is the pad wear indicator the manual describes.
  3. Watch live wheel speeds. On a slow test drive, graph all four wheel speeds. A wheel that drops to zero or spikes while the others read smoothly is your problem corner.
  4. Inspect that corner. Pull the wheel. Look at the sensor tip for iron dust, the connector for corrosion, and the harness for chafe where it passes the strut and knuckle. Check the hub for play by rocking the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock.
  5. Test before you buy. Test the sensor circuit using the factory service manual procedure for your model year and drive type before replacing parts.
  6. Clear the codes and retest. After the repair, clear the codes and drive the car. The light should stay off through turns and over bumps.

Lexus Service Bulletins: Do They Apply to the GS350?

Owners searching this problem often find Lexus bulletin L-SB-0016-16, "ABS Brake Warning Light On." It describes brake, ABS and TRAC lights with codes C1391, C1252, C1253 or C1256 caused by a small internal fluid leak in the brake actuator. That bulletin covers the 2006-2007 GS430, 2007-2011 GS450h, 2008-2011 GS460, 2007-2013 LS460 and 2006-2008 RX400h, not the 2013-2020 GS350. A similar 2019 bulletin, L-SB-0036-19, covers the 2013-2015 ES300h hybrid. If your GS350 shows those codes, a dealer diagnosis is still worth it, but do not assume a bulletin repair applies to your car. You can also check your own VIN for open recalls on the NHTSA recall lookup.

Fixing It: What to Replace and What to Replace With It

Most GS350 ABS lights are fixed with one of these repairs:

  • Wheel speed sensor: a bolt-in part at the knuckle. Clean the mounting bore so the new sensor seats fully, and route the harness exactly as the original.
  • Hub bearing: if the bearing has play or noise, replace the hub assembly. The encoder comes with it, so the sensor may not need replacing.
  • Harness or connector repair: a broken sensor lead can often be replaced as a separate pigtail.

If the corner is apart for a sensor or bearing and the pads are thin or the rotors are grooved, that is the time to do the brakes on that axle. A matched 2013-2020 Lexus GS350 front brake kit puts new rotors and pads on both sides at once. The owner's manual notes the front discs on these cars can wear faster than conventional discs, and Lexus recommends measuring disc thickness whenever pads are replaced. You can also shop individual brake pads and brake rotors, and a brake hardware kit keeps new pads quiet. Clean any iron dust off the sensor and encoder before reassembly.

Difficulty: replacing a sensor is a moderate driveway job with basic hand tools. A hub bearing is harder and needs axle nut and hub bolt torque values from the factory service manual. Anything involving the ABS actuator, bleeding it, or the brake booster is a job for a shop with a Lexus-capable scan tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to drive a GS350 with the ABS light on?

With only the ABS light on, the regular brakes work, but ABS and brake assist may not, so the wheels can lock in a hard stop and stopping distance on slippery roads increases. Drive gently and get it scanned soon. If the red brake light is also on, stop and do not keep driving.

Why are my ABS, VSC and traction lights all on at once?

All three systems use the same four wheel speed sensors. One failed sensor or damaged wire disables ABS, TRAC and VSC together, which is why they usually light as a group.

Will disconnecting the battery clear the ABS light?

Usually not for long. The module rechecks the sensors every time you drive, so the light returns until the fault is fixed. Read the codes before clearing so you know which wheel to look at.

Can new brake pads cause the ABS light to come on?

The pads themselves do not, but a brake job can. A sensor wire that gets pulled or pinched, a sensor knocked loose, or iron dust left on the sensor tip can all set a code right after a pad or rotor change.

What brake fluid does the GS350 use?

The owner's manual specifies FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 or SAE J1703 brake fluid. Use newly opened fluid, since brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air.
