On a 2020-2022 Kia Telluride, an ABS light that stays on is most often a wheel speed sensor problem. Kia runs a voluntary service campaign (SC301) on 2020-2023 and certain 2024 Tellurides because moisture can corrode the wheel speed sensors, causing signal fluctuation, an ABS warning light, and brief ABS activation at low speed. Check whether your VIN is covered first, then work through the other causes below.
How the ABS Works on the Telluride
Every 2020 Telluride trim comes standard with the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Vehicle Stability Management, Hill-start Assist Control and an Electronic Parking Brake, per Kia's own feature sheet. Underneath, the hydraulics are a dual-diagonal, split-circuit, power-assisted system with vented front discs and solid rear discs (13.4 in. front, 12.0 in. rear on the 2020 model).
The ABS computer, which Kia calls the HECU (Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit), watches a speed sensor at each wheel. When one wheel slows faster than the others under braking, the HECU pulses pressure to that wheel so it keeps rolling. Because ESC, traction control and hill-start assist all use the same four wheel speed signals, a single bad sensor usually lights up more than one warning at once.
At start-up the ABS light should stay on for about three seconds while the system runs a self-check, then go out. If it stays on, the ABS has logged a fault. Kia's owner information notes that the normal braking system still works in that state; you just lose the anti-lock function, and usually stability control with it.
The Wheel Speed Sensor Service Campaign (SC301)
In May 2024 Kia notified dealers of Voluntary Service Campaign SC301 covering all 2020-2023 model year Tellurides and certain 2024 models built from January 9, 2019 through March 10, 2024. That span covers every 2020, 2021 and 2022 Telluride.
The bulletin states the wheel speed sensors may be contaminated with moisture, causing corrosion and signal fluctuation. In rare cases that fluctuation causes intermittent, momentary ABS activation at low speed while braking, and the ABS warning light may come on. Kia states the ability to stop the vehicle is unaffected.
The dealer remedy has two parts:
- Inspect the wheel speed sensors and replace any that need it.
- Update the HECU software with improved logic to reduce the effect of signal fluctuation.
The campaign is performed at no cost to the owner. If your Telluride has an ABS light, a pedal that buzzes or pulses at walking speed on dry pavement, or both, have a Kia dealer check whether SC301 has been completed on your VIN before buying any parts. A replaced sensor without the software update may leave you with the same symptom.
Other Common Causes of an ABS Light
| Cause | Typical clue | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Corroded or failed wheel speed sensor | ABS and ESC lights together, often after rain or a car wash; low-speed pedal pulsing | Replace the sensor (SC301 on covered VINs) |
| Damaged sensor wiring or connector | Light comes and goes over bumps or on steering lock | Repair harness at the wheel well or knuckle |
| Debris on sensor tip or damaged tone ring | Fault appears after a brake job or hub work | Clean the tip, inspect the ring, check air gap |
| Worn wheel bearing | Hum or growl that changes with speed, plus ABS light | Replace the hub bearing |
| Low battery voltage | Light appears after a jump start or weak crank | Charge or replace the battery, re-check |
| Low brake fluid | Red brake warning light on as well | Find the leak or check pad wear before topping off |
Wheel speed sensors and tone rings. Brake and Front End notes that magnetic sensors can collect metallic debris from semi-metallic pads and rotors, and that even a tiny nick in the tone ring can disrupt the signal. An air gap that is too wide gives a weak or erratic signal, or none at all. After any brake or hub job, check that the sensor was reinstalled fully seated and that its wire was not stretched or pinched.
Battery voltage. Kia's owner's manual notes that after a jump start from a drained battery, the ABS warning light may turn on because of low voltage, and that this does not by itself mean the ABS has failed. Charge the battery fully, restart, and see whether the light clears.
Brake fluid. On the Telluride the red parking brake and brake fluid warning light comes on when the fluid in the reservoir is low. The manual says to stop somewhere safe, check the level, top up with the fluid specified in the manual, and inspect for leaks. Fluid level drops normally as pads wear, so a low reservoir on a high-mileage Telluride often means thin pads rather than a leak. If the red brake light and the ABS light are on together, do not keep driving; have it checked before the next trip.
How to Diagnose It
- Note which lights are on. ABS alone points to a sensor, wiring or HECU fault. ABS plus the red brake light points to low fluid or a hydraulic problem and should be treated as urgent.
- Restart the vehicle. Pull over somewhere safe, switch off and restart; if the light goes out after the self-check, the fault may have been momentary. If it stays on, there is a stored fault.
- Read the codes with an ABS-capable scan tool. A basic engine code reader often cannot see ABS codes. The code tells you which wheel's sensor or circuit set the fault.
- Check live data. Drive slowly and watch all four wheel speeds. A sensor that drops out, reads zero, or jumps around while the others are smooth is the one to replace.
- Inspect the corner. Look at the connector for green corrosion, the wire for rub-through, and the hub for play or noise. On passive sensors, resistance and AC output can be checked against the service manual value; active sensors are best judged from live data or a scope.
The Fix and Which Parts to Replace Together
If your VIN is covered by SC301, let the dealer do the sensor inspection and software update first; that costs you nothing. If the campaign is already done and a sensor still fails, the repair is a single sensor at the affected wheel, torqued to the value in the factory service manual. Clean rust and scale from the sensor bore before installing the new one so it seats at the correct air gap.
A few things are worth doing while that corner is apart:
- Check pad thickness and rotor condition. If you are already removing the caliper or the wheel for sensor access, it is the cheapest time to replace worn brake pads and brake rotors. For the back axle, our 2020-2022 Kia Telluride rear brake kit includes matched rotors and pads.
- Replace hardware. New clips and slide pins from a brake hardware kit keep pads from dragging, which reduces the metallic dust that can build up on sensor tips.
- Look at the hoses. The sensor wire often runs alongside the flexible brake hose. A cracked or swollen hose should be replaced with new brake hoses, then the system bled.
- Remember the electronic parking brake. The Telluride's rear calipers use an electric parking brake, so the rear pistons must be retracted with a scan tool or the service mode described in the service manual, not forced back with a clamp.
How Hard Is the Job?
Replacing a wheel speed sensor is usually a moderate driveway job: remove the wheel, unclip the wire from its brackets, unplug the connector, remove the retaining bolt, and install the new sensor. The hard part is often a sensor seized in its bore by corrosion, which is exactly the failure the SC301 campaign describes. The rear brakes are harder because of the electronic parking brake. Clearing the ABS code and confirming all four wheel speeds on live data takes a scan tool, so budget for one if you do the work yourself.

Is it safe to drive a Telluride with the ABS light on?
With the ABS light on, the normal brakes still work but without anti-lock assistance, and ESC may also be limited. Drive gently, leave more stopping distance, and get it checked soon. If the red brake warning light is also on, stop driving and check the fluid.
Does the wheel speed sensor campaign cover my 2021 Telluride?
Campaign SC301 covers all 2020-2023 model year Tellurides and certain 2024 models built from January 9, 2019 through March 10, 2024. A Kia dealer can confirm whether it has been completed on your specific VIN.
Why does my ABS kick in at low speed on dry pavement?
That is the symptom Kia describes in SC301: a corroded wheel speed sensor sends a fluctuating signal, and the HECU briefly thinks a wheel is locking. The dealer remedy is a sensor inspection or replacement plus a software update.
Can new brake pads cause the ABS light to come on?
Not directly, but a brake job can. A sensor knocked out of position, a pinched or stretched sensor wire, or debris on the sensor tip can all set an ABS fault. Recheck the sensor and its wiring at the corner you worked on.
Will disconnecting the battery clear the ABS light?
If the fault is still present, the light returns after the self-check. A low-voltage event after a jump start can turn the light on, but a real sensor or wiring fault needs to be repaired and the code cleared with a scan tool.
