Most brake caliper trouble on a 2015-2021 Jeep Renegade shows up as a pull to one side, a hot or smelly wheel after a drive, uneven pad wear, or a brake fluid leak at one corner. The usual causes are seized slide pins, a sticking piston or a torn dust boot, and the fix is to service or replace the caliper, then bleed the system. The rear calipers carry the electronic parking brake, so they have to be put into Brake Service Mode before anyone pushes a piston back, and 2020 models built in a short window were recalled for a cracked right rear caliper.

How the Renegade Caliper System Works

When you press the pedal, the master cylinder pushes brake fluid through the lines to each caliper, and the fluid forces a piston out against the inner pad. On a floating (sliding) caliper, the body then slides on its guide pins so the outer pad clamps the other side of the rotor. Wagner Brake lists the parts that matter for diagnosis: the piston, the slide pins that let the caliper move on its bracket, the dust boot that keeps dirt and water away from the piston, and the bleeder screw used to purge air.

The Renegade uses disc brakes at all four corners, and the rear calipers double as the parking brake. Instead of a cable and lever, the Renegade has an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB): a small motor on each rear caliper drives the piston out to hold the car. That changes how rear caliper work is done, which we cover below.

Symptoms of a Bad Caliper on a Renegade

Caliper problems tend to announce themselves at one wheel rather than all four. Watch for these signs, which Wagner and Cardone both list as common failure indicators:

  • Pulling to one side under braking, or a steady drift even when you are not braking. A caliper that will not release drags that wheel.
  • Uneven pad wear, where one pad on an axle is much thinner than the others, or the inner pad is worn far more than the outer one (a classic sign of seized slide pins).
  • A hot wheel or burning smell after a normal drive. Carefully hold your hand near each wheel after a short trip; one that is much hotter than its partner points to drag.
  • Grinding, squealing or clunking from one corner, which can come from a stuck piston or a caliper loose on its bracket.
  • Vibration or shaking when braking, caused by uneven clamping pressure on the rotor.
  • Wet residue on the inside of the wheel or tire, a low brake fluid level, or a soft pedal. A leaking piston seal lets fluid out and air in.
  • Longer stopping distances or a pedal that feels different from usual.

On the rear axle, a parking brake that will not release or a "Service Electronic Park Brake" style warning can point at the EPB motor or its wiring rather than the hydraulic side of the caliper, so check for warning messages before condemning the caliper itself.

What Causes Renegade Calipers to Fail

The Renegade is small and light, but it spends a lot of its life in the same salt-belt, short-trip driving that is hard on any caliper. The common causes are:

  • Corrosion. Moisture, road salt and dirt corrode the slide pins, bracket and piston. Once a pin rusts in its bore the caliper can no longer float, and the pads wear unevenly and drag.
  • Torn dust boots. A split boot lets water reach the piston. Rust on the piston surface then scrapes the seal and the piston sticks.
  • Heat. Braking generates a lot of heat, and over time it hardens the piston seal. A tired seal retracts the piston less and can start to weep fluid.
  • Old brake fluid. Brake fluid absorbs water over time, which corrodes the caliper bore from the inside. Flush it on the interval in your owner's manual, using the fluid type printed on the reservoir cap.
  • Casting defects. Rare, but it happened on this model. See the recall below.

The 2020 Renegade Rear Caliper Recall

FCA recalled a small number of 2020 Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X models (NHTSA campaign 19V-909, filed as 19V909000) because the right rear brake caliper could have been fractured during the casting process. A cracked caliper can fail and reduce braking performance, raising the risk of a crash. The recall covered 1,353 vehicles built between November 14 and December 6, 2019 according to the NHTSA filing, and it began on February 7, 2020. Dealers inspect the right rear caliper and replace it if needed, free of charge. The Brake Report noted that FCA knew of no accidents or warranty claims tied to the issue when it filed.

If you own a 2020 Renegade, run your VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup or ask a Jeep dealer before paying for a right rear caliper yourself. Any open recall work is free.

Rear Calipers and Brake Service Mode

This is the part that catches most DIYers. Because the EPB motor holds the rear piston, you cannot simply push the piston back with a C-clamp to fit new pads or remove the caliper. The actuator has to be retracted first, and forcing the piston can damage the caliper.

The Renegade owner's manual describes a Brake Service Mode that retracts the parking brake actuators for service. Per the 2017 manual, it can only be activated when all of these are true:

  • The vehicle is at a standstill.
  • The parking brake is released.
  • The transmission is in Park or Neutral.
  • The EPB switch is not being operated.
  • The ignition is in RUN.
  • The brake pedal is not pressed.

Depending on year and equipment the mode is entered from the vehicle settings menu or with a scan tool that supports EPB service; if your settings menu does not offer it, use the scan tool. To exit, the manual says to stop the vehicle, press the brake pedal with moderate force and apply the EPB switch. The cluster shows a message if the mode cannot be entered or exited. Do the job with the wheels chocked, since the rear parking brake is off the whole time.

Replacing a Renegade Caliper: What to Expect

Replacing a front caliper on a Renegade is a moderate DIY job with basic hand tools, a line wrench and a way to bleed the brakes. A rear caliper adds the Brake Service Mode step and an electrical connector for the EPB motor. The general sequence:

  1. Raise and support the vehicle, and remove the wheel. For rear work, put the EPB into service mode first.
  2. Clamp or plug the brake hose, then remove the banjo bolt or hose fitting. For a rear caliper, unplug the EPB motor connector.
  3. Remove the caliper guide bolts and lift the caliper off. Inspect the bracket, pins and rotor.
  4. Fit the new or remanufactured caliper with new sealing washers, torque every fastener to the value in the factory service manual, and reconnect the EPB connector.
  5. Bleed the caliper until the fluid runs clear with no bubbles, then top up the reservoir.
  6. Exit service mode, cycle the parking brake several times, and pump the pedal to seat the pads before driving.

Always replace calipers in pairs on an axle so both sides clamp evenly, and if the old caliper was dragging, check the pads and rotor on that side for heat damage.

What to Replace at the Same Time

Part Why replace it with the caliper
Brake pads A dragging caliper overheats and glazes pads, and uneven wear leaves one pad short. Fit new pads on both sides of the axle.
Rotors Drag overheats the rotor. Replace if it is below minimum thickness, scored or causes pedal pulsation.
Hardware kit New clips, shims and boots let the pads move freely; old corroded clips cause the same drag you are fixing.
Brake hose A collapsed or swollen hose can hold pressure on the caliper and mimic a stuck piston.
Brake fluid You are opening the system anyway. A full flush clears moisture-laden fluid that corrodes the new caliper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I push the rear caliper piston back on a Jeep Renegade with a C-clamp?

Not until the electronic parking brake is retracted. Put the vehicle in Brake Service Mode (from the vehicle settings menu or with a scan tool) first. Forcing the piston while the EPB actuator is extended can damage the caliper.

Is my 2020 Renegade part of the rear caliper recall?

Only a small batch built from mid-November to early December 2019 was covered under NHTSA campaign 19V-909. Check your VIN on the NHTSA recall site or with a Jeep dealer; if it is included, the inspection and any caliper replacement are free.

Should I replace both calipers or just the bad one?

Replace them in pairs on the same axle. A new caliper and an old one will not clamp or release identically, which can cause a pull and uneven pad wear.

Can a sticking caliper be fixed without replacing it?

Sometimes. If the problem is dry or rusted slide pins, cleaning the bores and re-greasing the pins with the correct high-temperature brake grease can cure it. If the piston itself is seized or the seal leaks, a replacement or remanufactured caliper is usually the more reliable fix.

Why does my Renegade pull to one side only when braking?

A caliper that is not applying fully on one side, a seized slide pin, contaminated pads or a restricted brake hose can all cause a brake pull. Compare pad wear and wheel temperature side to side to find the corner at fault.

Do I need to bleed the brakes after replacing a caliper?

Yes. Disconnecting the hose lets air in, and air in the lines gives a soft pedal. Bleed the replaced caliper at minimum, and consider a full flush if the fluid is old.
