2014-2020 Infiniti Q50 ABS Light On: Common Causes and Fixes

ABS warning light causes on a 2014-2020 Infiniti Q50

When the ABS light stays on in a 2014-2020 Infiniti Q50, the car's control module has found a fault in the anti-lock system and has switched anti-lock braking off until it is repaired. Your normal brakes still work, but the wheels can lock in a panic stop. On the Q50 the usual culprits are a wheel speed sensor, its wiring or connector, or the tone ring and wheel bearing that the sensor reads, with low brake fluid and the ABS actuator itself further down the list.

How the ABS system works on the Q50

Every corner of the Q50 has a wheel speed sensor that reads a toothed or magnetic ring turning with the hub. The ABS control module compares the four signals continuously. If one wheel slows much faster than the others under braking, the module pulses the brake pressure to that wheel through the hydraulic actuator so the tire keeps rolling and you keep steering control. The same wheel speed data feeds Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), traction control and electronic brake force distribution, which is why an ABS fault often brings on the VDC or slip light at the same time.

The key point: the module needs a clean, believable signal from all four sensors. If any one drops out, reads erratically, or disagrees with the other three, the module sets a trouble code, turns on the ABS lamp and disables anti-lock until the fault is fixed and the code clears.

What the warning lights are telling you

Light What it usually means How urgent
ABS on briefly at start-up, then off Normal bulb and self-check No action needed
ABS stays on after start-up or comes on while driving ABS fault stored; anti-lock is disabled Drive gently, get it scanned soon
ABS plus VDC or slip light Shared wheel speed input has failed, so stability and traction functions are also limited Get it scanned soon, avoid hard braking on slick roads
Red BRAKE light (with or without ABS) Parking brake engaged, low brake fluid, or a hydraulic or brake force distribution problem Check fluid immediately; do not drive if the pedal feels low or soft

The red BRAKE light matters most. An amber ABS light on its own means you have normal braking without the anti-lock backup. A red BRAKE light together with ABS can mean rear brake force distribution is also off, and the rear wheels can lock earlier than you expect. Treat that combination as a stop-and-check situation.

Common causes of an ABS light on a 2014-2020 Q50

1. Failed wheel speed sensor

This is the most common single cause on any modern car. Active sensors are powered by the ABS module and can fail internally, short, or lose their supply. They also live behind the wheel where heat, road salt and water attack them. A scan tool will normally point to one specific corner, for example a front-left or rear-right sensor circuit or signal code.

2. Damaged wiring or connector

The sensor harness flexes every time the suspension moves and the wheels steer. Chafed or broken wires, a pulled clip, or a corroded connector give the same code as a dead sensor. Wiring is also the thing most often damaged during brake work, when a caliper is hung by the hose or a harness clip is not refastened after a pad and rotor job. If the light came on right after brake service, check that corner's harness and connector first.

3. Dirty sensor tip or damaged tone ring

Sensors are magnetic, so they collect metallic brake and rust debris. A heavy buildup, a cracked or rusted tone ring, or a chipped tooth makes the signal jump or drop out. Even a small height variation on a single tooth can make the signal fluctuate enough to set a code, often only at certain speeds.

4. Worn wheel bearing or hub

The sensor has to sit a fixed distance from the ring it reads. When a wheel bearing wears, the hub moves around and that gap changes as the wheel turns, so the signal becomes weak or erratic. A bearing that also hums or growls with speed, plus an ABS code for that same wheel, is a strong clue. Where the encoder is built into the hub or bearing, the fix is the hub, not the sensor.

5. Low brake fluid

Brake fluid drops as pads wear because the caliper pistons move out. A low reservoir usually brings on the red BRAKE light and can bring on ABS as well. Topping up without asking why it is low is a mistake: either the pads are worn thin or there is a leak. Use only the fluid type printed on the Q50 reservoir cap or in the owner's manual.

6. ABS actuator or control module

The hydraulic actuator and electronic unit can fail, but they are expensive and far less common than sensor and wiring faults, so rule those out first. A recall covered ABS actuator pump-seal leaks that could damage the circuit board, but Infiniti's own recall page lists that campaign for the 2017 QX60 only, not the Q50. The NHTSA recall listings we checked for the 2014 and 2018 Q50 show no brake or ABS recall. Always run your own VIN through Infiniti's recall lookup before paying for an actuator.

7. Mismatched tires or wrong parts

The module expects all four wheels to turn at close to the same speed. A badly mismatched tire size, or a replacement hub or axle with the wrong tone ring tooth count, makes one wheel read fast or slow and can set a code.

How to diagnose it step by step

  1. Check the basics. Parking brake fully released, brake fluid level, tire sizes and pressures matched on all four corners.
  2. Read the codes with an ABS-capable scan tool. A basic engine code reader often cannot see ABS codes. The code tells you which wheel and whether it is a circuit fault or a signal fault.
  3. Watch live wheel speed data. On a test drive, the four speeds should track together. One that drops to zero, lags or spikes identifies the problem corner.
  4. Inspect that corner. Follow the harness along its whole run, unplug and inspect the connector for corrosion or bent pins, pull the sensor and clean the tip, and check the tone ring and wheel bearing play.
  5. Test before you buy. Check supply voltage and the signal with a meter or oscilloscope where the service information allows. Measuring right at the plug is tricky, so back-probe carefully rather than spreading the terminals.
  6. Clear the codes and road test. After the repair, clear codes and drive with the scanner connected to confirm all four signals are clean and the light stays off.

The fix, and what to replace at the same time

Most Q50 ABS lights are fixed with one wheel speed sensor, a wiring repair, or a hub and bearing assembly. Clean the mounting bore before installing a new sensor, route the harness exactly as original with every clip fastened, and tighten the sensor bolt to the torque in the factory service manual. Over-tightening can crack the sensor body.

If you are already at that corner, look at the brakes too. Pad wear drops the fluid level, and a pad job is when sensor harnesses get damaged, so it makes sense to do the work in one visit. For this car we carry Power Stop front ceramic brake pads for the 2014-2020 Infiniti Q50 and Q60, and you can browse more brake pads and brake rotors or the full brake parts catalog. Replace pads in axle sets and replace rotors that are below minimum thickness or deeply scored.

Difficulty: a sensor swap is a moderate driveway job if the sensor comes out cleanly. Rusted-in sensors, harness repairs and hub replacement are harder and may need a press or special tools. Actuator replacement requires a proper brake bleed with a scan tool and is best left to a shop.

Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?

With only the amber ABS light on and a normal, firm pedal, the car will stop, but without anti-lock protection. In rain, snow or a panic stop the wheels can lock and you lose steering. Leave extra following distance, brake earlier and get it diagnosed promptly. If the red BRAKE light is also on, the pedal feels soft or sinks, or the fluid is low, do not drive it until it has been checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the ABS and VDC lights on together on my Q50?

Both systems use the same wheel speed sensors. When one sensor signal is lost, the module disables anti-lock and limits stability and traction control, so both lights come on. Fixing the ABS fault normally clears both.

Can new brake pads cause the ABS light to come on?

The pads themselves do not, but the job can. A harness pulled out of its clip, a stretched sensor wire, or a sensor knocked out of place while the caliper was off can all set a code. Recheck the corner that was worked on.

Will disconnecting the battery turn off the ABS light?

It may clear the lamp temporarily, but if the fault is still there the module will set the code again, often within the first drive. Find and fix the cause.

Is the Q50 part of the Infiniti ABS actuator recall?

Infiniti's recall page lists that ABS actuator campaign for the 2017 QX60, not the Q50. Still, check your own VIN with Infiniti or NHTSA, since recall status is always VIN specific.

Should I replace all four wheel speed sensors at once?

No. Replace the sensor the codes and live data point to. Sensors fail individually, and a fault on one corner is often wiring or a bearing rather than the sensor.
